I want to go ahead share my experience to help anyone else who is trying to decide whether or not to perform this upgrade.
I have a 2016 3500 with the Cummins, premium cluster, dual ATC, heated/cooled seats, heated wheel, cargo/backup camera, Alpine audio system. The engine is stock - not tuned or deleted. It originally came with the stock Harmon 8.4" radio
First, a huge shout-out to Mike and the forum here for all of the information shared on this topic. It was incredibly helpful for me as I was deciding whether or not to do this myself
Now onto the project itself... If you decide you are ready to pull the trigger, I would go directly to Mike with M2 mods. He can potentially save you a lot of time trying to hunt down a radio if he happens to already have one available (which was the case for me). He can also make sure it is updated it is updated with the latest stable firmware that is available to the public. He sent me the radio along with the harness - both of which were in great shape and ended up working perfectly.
Install: Easy, especially if you have done any work with radios before. It is mostly just screws and clips. The clips are fairly robust and not likely to break compared to some of those more fragile clips. I do not have the jumpseat - So I removed the radio bezel, center storage/drink bezel and that plastic piece in the center console to access the harness. The radio is easy to install - all the connections are the same and only go in one way. Same goes with the adapter harness
Media Hub: I originally tracked down an old stock Chrysler 200 media hub as it is a perfect fit. However, it arrived broken. I attempted to have it soldered, but that did not work. I decided to go the route of getting a Compass hub from the nearest dealer. After filing the opening down a bit on the top side, I got the hub to fit. I also 3-d printed a basic bezel to cover the gaps. See post 4304. Happy to provide the bezel itself or the model file to those interested
Radio sync: After I installed the radio, I keyed the truck on for a few minutes and then let it set for 30 mins before keying on again. After 4 repeats of this procedure (2 hours), my truck was fully synced and the SXM button appeared
Use: Overall - I am really happy with the radio and glad I did this upgrade. It really scratches the itch of making the truck feel newer than it is ha. The Android Auto/Carplay works without issue. My dual zone ATC works as it did before and I confirmed full blend door travel. All softkey buttons work - heated/cooled seats, heated wheel, and I am able to access both cargo and backup cameras while driving forward. I transferred my SXM subscription and that works as well. In my opinion, it really woke up my Alpine sound system - especially over Bluetooth. FM radio sounds much better as well, especially on HD stations. I haven't noticed any issues with the EVIC displaying the radio, but I haven't tried with navigation yet. The only thing that caught my eye after a few weeks of use is that the cameras are slightly darker on this radio compared to the old one as some of the others reported. My backup camera is slowly failing, so I'll replace it with a 2018 PN once that happens and report back. In my opinion, it is not enough to really bother me to replace the camera at this time
Overall I would recommend this project. Please feel free to reach out with any questions specific to my truck
