its just like 2-seconds when i first start the truck. I've tried lots of oils, Pennzoil ultra diamond ruby platinum whatever its called and still get the tick. it's not on every start-up, maybe half the time. should I try royal purple or something that will "stick" better to the parts that are I guess drying out when engine has been sitting?

edit: just noticed i already asked this question in 2021 LOL. I never did try the Amsoil, I'll have to find some..

Have you tried a quick rev to 1500-2k rpm before you shut it off? If it's a very short drive. Example: wash truck in driveway and then fire it up to park it in the garage. Run time of maybe one minute then I'll hold it at 1500rpm for a good 5 plus seconds and immediately shut it off. Doing that I've never had ticking at startup. Without doing it mine will tick every time with that short of a runtime even with redline.

I really don't get that " Rev it & kill it" mentality anymore. Yeah, an argument could be made that you're circulating more coolant and oil, but unless you've been idling for a long period, nothing is oil starved. Half a century ago, before fuel injection, we did it to make sure the float bowl was filled to make the next start easier. Never really believed it then, but it was an excuse to be a little obnoxious.

Well if you don't believe it,park your truck for a couple hours, start it for a minute or 2,then shut it off and let sit overnight, and see if you have lifter rattle the next morning. It's a common issue on Hemi's to lifter rattle if they've only been run for a minute or so,then shut off.Revving them up to about 1500/1800 rpm before shutting off after a very short run time, seems to help with the problem

My '15 will do this EVERY time I short-trip her. For instance, driving to my in-laws house 2 blocks away.

Has done it ever since I've had her, 7 years on Sept 24, from 28k miles until today, at 193k miles.

It sounds like absolute dog$hit, and I cringe whenever it happens. If I remember to raise the rpm over 2k for 10 seconds or so, then shut it off, it does not clatter.

Oil sticking, the issue is the engine is hot when you turn it off so oil better known as base oil will shed of metal that is perpendicular such as lifters and pistons. You need to get the oil back as soon as possible, a good high flow filter will help. It appears you have the small filter spec, but the larger filter will work, royal purple filter 20-820. Fram endurance fe2 available Walmart is cousin to this filter. Biotech 50% success rate best to try this first, if that doesn't work redline 5w30 80% success rate at hemi tick. If these don't change the symptoms at all, I'd look hard at exhaust. You can try something else, but we know the success rates of these products with hemi tick. It is about the science, both products similar science esters plus oil soluble moly.

Ram Forum Members with hemi tick..

Poll results lubegard biotech
ended hemi tick-19 votes
made it better bot not 100% -29 votes
Didn't work at all -15 votes

Redline 5w30
ended hemi tick- 62 votes
made it better not 100%- 15 votes
Didn't help -15 votes

No way to get rid of that random startup Tick its part of the terrible design you can try some things mentioned above but at the end of the day probably wont make a huge diffrence I have done alot of cam/lifter jobs just change your oil every4-5k miles and use 5w30

You have 62 ram forum Members votes are public that would disagree you cant kill start up tick. Hemi tick is generally start up tick. This is usually the cheapest out there, problem being it is only 6 pack. I would punch in 2010 hemi ram into any oil filter filament chart and it will lead you to the larger filter, those small filters restrict flow pure fact.

5w30? Isn’t that too thick? Shouldn’t be 5w20?

5w30 redline is the tick oil, the nuclear option against hemi tick, best known thing. 5w20 can work, but it is less reliable for hemi tick, we have guys try both and some both worked and some 5w30 worked, none that I know of 5w30 didn't work and 5w20 did. If you are trying to kill tick, most guys are going to want the best known thing, and as you can see that is it. Poll is public, you can see the long term members this worked on.

You don't have to get it. It works. Or at least it does for my truck and a few others on here. That's how I learned about it.

Another option after a shut down of a short run is to do the "clear flood" mode (gas pedal to the floor while trying to start) or whatever it's called before you actually start it.

Once you hear that God awful noise you never want to hear it again.

@El_Dude keep us updated on what works and doesn't work for you. Hopefully it's as simple as changing to a different oil.

Its your oil filter. That's what the mechanic told me. Something about how the mopar filter is designed (that was in my 2014 Hemi).
