I've never really looked into it but I came across a youtube video of someone using the msd 6hemi ignition system. They used it with fast ez efi because it self tuned or some **** like that and they started it on the engine stand with no ecm/pcm.

2 questions. 1) does this replace or serve as the ecm/pcm? If so how? If not and someone has the knowledge that is willing to explain how the engine ran without the ecm please explain

2) what benefits is there in using a ignition system like this, if any

1) No, this simply controls ignition pulses and timing. It was originally designed for keeping the coil packs on a modern hemi with a carb; if memory serves this was also well before someone figured how to retrofit a distributor to the 3G. Does nothing for fuel control, strictly timing and firing plugs.
2) If you wanna fire the coils on a carb'd or standalone EFI system.
