Bought a 8.4 ucconect from a 2016 and installed it. Everything seems to work fine except there is no sound and volume controls do not respond. Also the radio thinks the truck isn't running when trying to access settings menu. The unit I bought is a VP3 CA. Anyone know what can be done to fix this ?

Did you do the full conversion with the harness, 8.4" bezel and heater control module or did you just install the radio without it? Your truck is an SLT so pretty sure it has the volume controls on the steering wheel. If so are they also not working. Lastly are you sure the radio was out of a Ram pickup?

No the steering wheel controls don't work either..... I found a thread about issues putting in 2016 radios into older trucks.... wonder if there is a fix. If not who wants to trade a 2016 for a 2014 radio :)

I put a 2016 VP4 (US) in my 2014 with no issues so I'm not sure what you heard there.

I'm going to repeat Rick's question: Did you do the full conversion with the harness, 8.4" bezel and heater control module or did you just install the radio without it?

Op bought a vp3 CA. Wondering if that has to do with that and if there are any compatibility issues. Not 100% sure though. Essentially sounds like it’s a bad radio and just need to replace with another one.

I know that. My point was that 2016 radios work just fine in a 2014 trucks, it's nothing inherent in the 2016 radios. The difference in a CA radio will be the cellular connection not being present and the installed apps being different.

As stated, steering wheel audio controls or the full 8.4 conversion with factory 8.4 bezel & volume knobs is required to get any audio it if these 8.4 radios.

FYI. I had issues with all 3x 2016 radios I tried in my 13 ram when I had it, on earlier radio SW versions (ie 16.x.x), see here. I've heard some reports that a 2016 radio updated to SW v18.x works fine.

Mpgrimm2 thanks. I've read in your thread about the 16 radios not working in older models. I have steering controls so that is what I would be using. I haven't done the conversion yet but from my research it's not required if you have steering controls.
Is there a repository of software somewhere. I would like to try to upgrade to v18.

Thanks again [emoji846]

I don't have most Canadian FW. You can ask in the thread I linked above and see if anyone has what you need they can share.

I can confirm that the '16 VP4 radio installed in my '14 (with harness and guidance from y'all and a new bezel and HVAC unit from Benny) worked fine, including full audio under the following firmware:

version 15.x for the 10 minutes I ran it until I started the 16.x upgrade
version 16.x for the 10 minutes I ran it until I started the 17.x upgrade
version 17.x for over a year
and
version 18.x since last November when I upgraded to get the GPS fix

I too had read of your issues with the '16 radios in your '13, but decided to take the chance (since I'd already ordered it at that point). Maybe I just got lucky, but I had no issues with the radio not playing nice with the truck. I also wonder if it was only an issue with the '13s. There are a few small odd differences between them and the '14+ trucks.

And that it’s a Canadian radio. Might be an issue when installing into a US Vehicle. Haha

Do you have the VIN from the donor truck? If you do, you should be able to get it from the UConnect site using that VIN. I think the CA trucks can get the downloads from there as well as the US trucks (correct me if I'm wrong Mike).

Oh, one more thing to check if you haven't already. When I did mine I somehow managed to bend of the pins in the radio side of the main connector. Caused my backup camera to not work until I teased it back into position. You might want to check for any issues in the connector.

You will likely have to take 2 blank USB sticks to the dealer along with the radio's VIN, and have them download v17.x and also v18.45.x

** Side note. . . Canadian radios have worked fine in USA trucks and vice versa... So far since 2013.

I'm guessing because of the "radio thinks the truck isn't running" issue you can't get to the menu to see what version it's actually running? I would definitely check the connector. If a can-bus pin is bent or missing, that could cause both issues.

I'll pull it out and check the pins. I know I read that the issue of it thinking the truck isn't running and the volume issues happened at the same time. I wonder if there is anything I can try in alphaobd

OK so I went to look and all pins are fine. Played around with alfaobd and was able to dump the fw info from the unit. I attached it below.
One interesting this is that there is some radio buzzer function test on alfaobd. When I activated anyone at random, I got the sound to play. Audio started working but controls did not work. I had to use my phones bluetooth volume to turn it down. After powering down there was no volume again until I played with the radio buzzer on alfa.. anyone know what that is ?a7cf383a4fa1133b0fb5e507080b307a.jpg

Not sure, but I do see something interesting there. It looks like the radio is still on firmware ver 15.x, despite the UConnect site telling you it was up to date. Mike's suggestion to get the dealer to download the newer firmware to a USB for you might be the way to go.
