So, to help protect my heater core from getting clogged I decided to install a coolant filter in line with it. Now it’s been close to a year and while I was doing some other work I decided to replace the filter. Here’s what I found. Lots of large pieces in the bottom and not alot of anything in the filter media. Now I’ve only had the truck for about two years and did a coolant flush when I got it. I’m running Valvoline XEREX OAT. I’m surprised that I still have such large pieces floating around in the coolant. Truck has 189k now.

If you try RMI 25, you would probably have to remove that filter first. It will take any rust or slime and dislodge it for trapping in the overflow. Might have some electrolysis going on. I do believe rmi 25 left in coolant prevents that, you would need to look that up.

It’s funny you bring up electrolysis. I have a 95 LT1 with aluminum heads and cast block. Read up on electrolysis and changed out the coolant. I never had a problem even with the older coolant. I’d have to check again on what I used. The junk that came out solid enough to hold its shape but even pressed it fell apart.

upon second look, that may not be rust but maybe copper stop leak? what was the color of the coolant?

The 6.4's are notorious for having left over casting sand in the block when the engine goes into use. Does it feel gritty.

I doudt its stop leak. I had it flushed before and Ive had apart twice with out any evidence. Unless its hiding deeper in the block somewhere. Coolant has always been orange.
