I just picked up some wheels and tires to "upgrade" my current stock setup.

I'm concerned because I didn't realize until I got home that there are some cracks in the sidewall. There is plenty of tread left, more so than my tires.

I got the set for $400, and I think the wheels are worth that. But I like the tires. I just don't want a catastrophic blow out. What's your guys opinions? And money is definitely a factor. If I can't run these I'll have to list them back on craigslist, as I can't afford a tire replacement. I'd like to eventually get some tires from treadwright.com when I do. Well, but not if I'm going to run into this problem again.

I don't know if dude even knew it was there. He was driving on them until he just put a lift and 37's on his truck, he said.

Here is an example of some of the worst looking type of crack. And the wheels.

yup that's rot. tires go bad after several yeas even if never mounted. Usually if you cant stick your finger vail in it's ok. but side was is scary. but yes if no pitting on chrome wheels worth 400 alone. look on CL for some tires now

Hmm, so don't use them? That's sucks for me. I'll just have to relist them, damn.

I'll maybe take it to a tire shop and see if they think it's bad enough to be unsafe. I hate it because I was wanting to run the tires that are on there. :( They have more tread on them than my current tires (which only have like 12k miles on them)

Tires were manufactured in Feb of '09, I'd run them, they're fine. All tires will have some cracking of the rubber, if you can see cords inside the cracks then it's time to worry.

Thanks, I actually txt a picture to the dude who sold them to me. I explained where the cracks were, and he was saying it looked a bit like stress cracks. Especially since they're not all over the tire, just the inside edge near the wheel/rim. The rest of the tread and sidewalls look just fine.

Thanks for looking at that number and telling me it was made in 2009, I feel a lot safer now.

I was a detailer for years and I always had to dress the tires, I have seen a thousand tires worse then that on the road. For what it's worth. I also rolled a truck once because of a blowout, so even though I've seen many tires still trucking worst then that, I personally would look to replace in a couple years or sooner. Maybe bring it to a tire guy for an opinion too.

ION is the brand, thats all I know. Couldn't find a match with a quick Google image search.

Edit ° I found the part number. It's an ION-179 different center caps than I see online. I broke one of them off turning one of the wheels over that were stacked on top of each other. I'll have to buy some more. Or one to match. Or just don't use them.

Thanks I'll take that advice. I'll hopefully use them for less than one year. I want some 285 65 r 18 AT tires from treadwright.com they're like 33" tires as opposed to the 31's on there now.

I would run them. Hell, sometimes after they get used and heated up the cracks become less noticeable.

I would also run them empty. However if your going to be towing or hauling alot of weight I would think twice.

I've heard that certain tire shines can actually help in not letting the tire dry out more

I don't tow/haul anything. But what do you mean run them empty? You mean with out air? Or use them until they're worn out?

I am at a tire shop now. The guy said it should be OK. Said he's seen much worse. Charging me $40 to swap over the TPMS. I am not going to even pay to balance the tires just yet. Figure I'll drive around and see how they ride before I spend anymore money on these things.

When I cleaned them up, turns out there is a ton of pitting on the inside of the wheel, behind the front part you can see well. I'll run them for a while, then maybe flip them back on craigslist if they fail or I decide I don't like them. I'm not 100% sure on the decision, but I don't want to turn back now.

Turns out the lugs I bought from pep boys weren't long enough or there wasn't enough space between the lug nut and the inside of the hole. I'm taking them off. Not going to use them. Back on craigslist.
