I need some help identifying where this knocking might be coming from.
I have been smelling exhaust in side the cab in start up as if it's an exhaust manifold leak, but this started while towing an empty trailer yesterday.

The knocking gets faster and slightly louder under acceleration and goes quiet when coasting or stopping and is quiet and steady when idling.

I have worked on alot of 4.7's It is time to replace your lifters easy job its over head cam since its a 4.7. Also inspect your timing chains /guides all 4.7 engines will need this done around 100k to make it another 100k also inspect your exhaust manifolds for broken bolts they may have warped.

I was thinking that might also be the issue, but it sounds almost like at coming from the bottom end.
The old gal is at around 182k miles on the odometer.

I tore into it today and get the valve covers off. Luckily it did not throw a rocker arm, but I found out that its time for a new timing chain, guides and tensioners. The chain for the left hand side has some slack in it.

doooo not cheap out with the amazon or ebay timing kits they dont last ive learnt my lesson. Also when your kit does come in make sure the lower tensioner was rivited and the guide does not slide off for a while there whoever was making them forgot to rivet them.

I picked up the kit from a local auto parts store. Ilthe kit was not cheap. And the tensioner is riveted.
I was not going to cheap out on this. Once I have it back together I do not want to have to take it apart again any time soon.

its not to bad just line up all of the marks your going to need to pull the oil pump you dont need to remove the oil pan just drop the front down and pull the bolt for the pickup alot of vids on how to do this on youtube most will show older 4.7 engines but its basically the same setup. Also i usually take this chance to replace the oil pump but you dont have to melling pumps usually ab $100.

@jws123 just because it's nagging me in the back of my mind. The kit I got had a packing plate for the left hand tensioner. I just want to make sure that I was supposed to install it. I did but can't tell if it was needed or not.

if your talking about the metal plate that goes behind the tensioner yes no idea why its only on one side.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality exhaust manifolds for the 4.7L? I looked at BD Diesel as I saw they had been recommended before but don't see any for the 4.7.

Thanks. I'm mainly planning ahead to do it when I can afford to incase any of the bolts broke off flush since I don't have a welder.

So after replacing the lifters, rocker arms, timing chain, exhaust manifolds and studs. And the noise not stopping, tomorrow I will be dropping the oil pan and checking the connecting rod bearings.
