I have what appears to be screen delam going on in a 2018 2500 Big Horn, 80K on the clock. The screen goes crazy and the radio jumps around and various other electronic anomalies pop up. From what I can tell this is all too common, and the fix is to replace the screen.

Went to our local mechanic and interviewed him to see if he was qualified to do it. He seemed to know what was going on and said he'd done some of these fixes in the past.

We asked him to order the parts. He's informed us that they're backordered because of a class-action suit against Stellantis over this issue (it's about time).

Are we stuck, or are there places around that can still get it done? I'm reluctant to go to the dealer for the usual reasons.

Any advice appreciated.

Hadn't read that a settlement had been instituted, knew it was under investigation. Have seen 3rd party replacement screens on eBay, do a search in this forum for similar threads and reach out to people who did the replacement and see how it went.

The screens are made by LG and are available from a multitude of eBay sellers. They range in price from 125-350 USD. Some sellers claim the screens they sell are branded with LG nomenclature and some state “generic” or “unbranded”. Most carry a 5 year warranty. The LG branded screens are the higher cost model. The most current part number is:
LA084X01(SL)(03). The original screens were LA084X01(SL)(01). Do not purchase the (01) screen as it will only fail again. The part number LA084X01(SL)(02) is acceptable but may have a glossy finish instead of a matte finish screen. My 18 was repaired with a (02) model and has been holding up for almost two years without issue. Screen replacement is not a difficult repair for anyone with modest mechanical ability.

There's a few video's on replacing the 8.4 screen,it's a pretty easy job. My experience with fixing radio's is virtually nil,and i had no issues redoing the screen on my wifes Challenger and it's the same 8.4 as the trucks have in regards to R&R'ing the screen

It's extremely easy to do. I've replaced 2, both on 2018 models as that's the year the issues happen the most.

You can buy a screen on Amazon and have it swapped out in about an hour if you're even remotely mechanically inclined. It's a few screws and a couple connectors. The longest part of the whole ordeal is removing the dash bezel. The rest is cake.

That begs the question…will swapping the screen in a 2016 1500 (8.4) to a newer screen yield better resolution?

Best,

I could not agree more! Anyone parked outside in sunlight will get UV damage to their interior. While I don’t use a towel I have ceramic window tint and religiously use my windshield shade. Any protection helps fight UV damage.

Why would there be a lawsuit of something failing after 7+ years and way past warranty?

20+ year from now, there is not going to be near any of the same amount vehicles on the road as "classics" due to vehicle electronics that will not age well or even be repairable in most cases.

I have a 2022 2500 with screen delaminating. So, not just vehicles out of warranty.

That would still be covered under warranty and not a lawsuit.

My original point was that parts and especially vehicle electronics will not be lasting into perpetuity.

I get what you’re saying. My point is that the delam is happening at any age of the vehicle. Yes, mine is on warranty but, they say it will take 8-10 weeks to get replacement. So, I have to look at this screwed up screen till then. If this had happened 8 months from now it would be out of pocket. Not good. So the company should be held accountable for cranking out these defective screens.

The overwhelming majority of screen delams are in 2018 models. For that year (according to an LG rep and confirmed by a Ram CSR), LG switched the screen mfg from Shenzhen, China(SL01) to a cheaper source in Guangzhou, China(SL02) to save money. The screens manufactured via the SL02 company had the delam issues.

LG moved manufacturing back to Korea late 2018/early 2019 (SL03) and improved on the glue they use for the screens. If you'll research the failure rate you'll see that it has drastically decreased since moving to the SL03 version. Not saying it doesn't happen on a 5th gen, but it is SIGNIFICANTLY less, and not significant enough to warrant a recall.

I’ve always used my sun screen and the panel still delaminated. I did the clean up method. It’s tough to get all the gooey mess and there are still some shadowing issues. I’m about ready to purchase a replacement panel. There’s no way the dealer is touching my truck. Ever.

The replacement panel is really about the only way to properly fix it. On my 2500, the glue dripped into my switch panel below and stuck my exhaust brake and tow/haul button. I ended up replacing the screen and that panel.

On my 2014, 2016, and 2019 vehicles with the 8.4 I never had an issue. None of them used sun shades. My current truck has ceramic window/windshield tint and the screen still delaminated. It isn't the sun, but the heat from the radio causes the glue to break down prematurely.

Same thing happened to my 2018 1500. Dealer took care of it, under my extended warranty. Had to replace the whole unit. There was a back order on the units, so it took about six weeks I think to get it in. Total cost, under warranty, was $100 for deductible, once per issue, for durration of warranty.

When i did the screen on the wifes 2019 Challenger,i added a couple little 12 volt fans in behind and on the side of the radio, wired in so they came on with the ignition. Not sure they did as much as i was hoping, but the screen/radio did run cooler to the touch.
