Let us know how it goes... I've never heard of a TCM being inside a 68RFE transmission. Something still sounds off.

You have the valve body, separator plate, the solenoid pack, and then the gears/clutches.

Sorry, I tried to wait until I'd finished, but can't. LOL
Took the Ram to Family Auto, the tech knows his stuff. He told me that the TCM is inside the ECM. He traced out the system and then tapped into the wires behind the TIPM. When the Cummins starts, the ECM sends a signal to the TIPM to the relay BUILT INTO THE TIPM. That relay sends power back into the TCM side of the ECM, telling the transmission to do its job. That power relay is intermittently not sending the signal to the TCM, thus Limp Home mode, next time works fine. He called MAKS about what is happening, they said to do a hard reset of the TIPM by disconnecting the batteries and tieing the positive/negative leads together for at least eight hours to ensure that there is NO electrical power anywhere in the Ram, thus resetting the TIPM. If that fixes it, problem solved, if not they will send me another TIPM. I did that yesterday at 4:30, when I get myself in gear later and reconnect the batteries and we will know.
Cost so far? Nothing. I think the bill will hurt, but so worth it to have my great Ram back to normal.
Next report later.

I like this tech much better. What he said sounds correct. :)
The trans relay is built into the TIPM, but not the TCM itself.

If the transmission problems began right after you installed that, it could be that the relay on the TIPM isn't working properly.

If it's a MAKS failure, I'd ask them about footing the bill for the technician. You shouldn't have to pay if they indeed provided you with a faulty part.

Good idea.
That did not fix the P0882, it is locked in now and I can't clear it. MAKS, here I come.

I wonder how much they'll push back on paying the tech if the TIPM ends up being the problem.

Edit: Ahh, nevermind. I guess they intend for customers to install themselves.

It's done.
MAKS believed the tests we did and shipped me another TIPM. I installed it and the transmission is shifting as it should.
Thanks for y'all's help.
Now to repair the serpentine belt falling off due to play in the water pump. Damn.
