I second that emotion!

I'm guessing every single one of us here has gamed the 'engine failure' scenario at least once in our minds, haha. For me, it's a no-brainer, a brand new crate engine, and swap it in.
While I didn't suffer a "lockup" like this OP, I chose to rebuild mine because I knew where it had been.

It probably would've cost me a bit more than the $6k I spent on the rebuild for a crate MDS motor, but it is what it is, I have to live with my own choice.

With a lockup failure like the OP's, crate motor all the way every day and twice on Sunday.

Even if someone did drop $6-8k for a crate, it is still cheaper than a similar used Ram, with no guarantee how long the used one will last.

Basic synopsis

Dropped and broken valve in #3 cylinder. Valve head broke completely off of stem. Damaged the head, cylinder wall, piston, and slightly deformed connecting rod. Rods and mains ok. Lifters looked great. Even the MDS ones. Still had cross hatching in cylinder walls.

Took engine and a pile of parts to local machine shop. Spent 6 weeks there. Bored .020 over to remove defect. Crank polished. 1 new connecting rod. Remanned driver head from Bishop Machine. Passenger head refreshed along with valve job. There wasn’t a bearing, seal, or gasket that wasn’t replaced. I got it back assembled up to the valve covers minus the intake manifold. $3,200. That’s the price for the parts and labor for machining and rebuilding the short block, rebuilding the passenger head with a valve job, as well as installing the parts I provided (head, cam, lifters, springs, spring seats, valves, retainers, push rods, Melling timing kit with HV oil pump, rear main seal, other seals, gaskets, etc.)

MMX MDS delete kit w/ stock spec cam. Diablo Sport Predator X used to disable MDS. Replaced the Carquest water pump with an AISIN unit. I decked the exhaust manifolds at home on a scrap piece of granite counter top with sticky back emery cloth attached. Time consuming but saved a couple bucks. They were ~.035 banana’d. Had some broken manifold bolts (knew that already). Remflex gaskets. J&L oil separator. Various new sensors. 192 beers…

Some more damage pics to come.

What lifters did you go back in with?

Outstanding idea using the slab of granite as a flat surface and sticky back sanding belt, but whoh, what a long process..

I'm too lazy so it's the used (or HF) 24-36" belt sander for me.
I used a similar method to surface my heads, two 400 grit belts glued to a glass tabletop with 3M #77 adhesive.

But, belt sander definately for exhaust manifolds, you will be there all day.
