Long story short they had the cam timed 180° out. Luckily they got away with just new pushrods.

We were not that far off. We timed to 12 o'clock and the correct mark was at 1 o'clock...that was still 4+ teeth.

If heads were off I think I would check for bent valves, if not you could pull a spark plug & do leak down test on each cylinder, check for air out the exhaust or intake for bent valve (not closed all the way).
If heads are off I would inspect lifter internals & rollers, if heads are on, its a crap shoot.

Assuming you have the heads off I would STRONGLY suggest that you purchase a valve spring compressor and one at a time compress each spring & remove the keepers ( half moons) so you can get the valve out. Also get some valve grinding compound and a valve "lapper" which is a rod with suction cups.

This is NOT intended to further grind the valve face/ seat but to check for bent valves. I used to machine heads and would do this after grinding the valves and seats to assure a good machining job. We used to call it cheap insurance.

With the valve out, put a small amount of grinding compound on just 1 spot on the valve seat ( on the head where the valve contacts / seals). Then slide the valve back in, stick the lapper suction cup on the valve then rotate the lapper back & forth by putting your flat palms on either side of lapping rod and spinning it. Then lift the valve out carefully without touching the seat or valve mating surface. Look at it. Where the surfaces touched you will see the compound is a lighter color than when you first put it on. If the valve is bent, you will still have darker compond on the part of the vavle contact surface where it' s not touching. A good valve will have about 1/8" wide uniform color all the way around on both the valve and seat. If not then the valve is bent.

We poured gas into the ports on each valve to see if they were seating. Two of the exhaust valves leaked so we do have some bending. Taking it back to the machine shop.

For every guy who pulls his pants up and gives it a go, there are 1,000's like me who sit on the sidelines. Hats off to your for trying, and hats off to you for going again, and hats off for posting it, we all have learned a bunch. I know my hemi is heading for the same fate, hopefully when it goes I will give it a go like you sir.

Couldn't agree more with your statement. Thanks for taking us through your journey.

Don't forget to let us know how it goes. Good luck

Will update. Parts are ordered and the heads are at the machine shop. Its crazy to think we did everything right except the timing was off. That created a chain effect that caused everything. Bummer.

Every dude reading this feels for ya, hope that helps a bit. Nothing like the lesson I learned last year, never chain saw a tree w/o a helmet. 10 inch wide branch grabbed a freak way right into my dome on an 11 foot ladder my wife was holding. She was scratched to hell and back and I nearly died, still get headaches. Freak accident, still don't understand it. It was a straight down cut, something about the wood, it was Chinese elm so really hard. Made the exact cut 100's of times on trees. It is what it is, **** happens. If we could turn back time, I would gladly trade you lessons, I'll take yours and you can take mine? Let me know, I will try and get Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown to hook it up.

Are you sure it wasn't a Russian elm?

Man I would hate to see you put this all back together , concentrating on the heads and pushrods , and then down the road your replacing the camshaft and lifters all over again

Every time I have kissed a piston and bent a pushrod , the cam lobe and lifter was junk

Think of what that lifter and cam lobe went through to bend those push rods

And then once the cam goes , all that metal flowing through your bearings and oil pump before it reaches the filter

Definitely worth examining the cam & replacing the lifters from the cylinders that had bent valves. Op said the exhaust were bent so you would have to think all exhaust valves hit the pistons so replace all exhaust lifters. You don't want to have to tear it down a 3rd time trying to save a few bucks

Got the heads back. The machine shop found nothing wrong. I guess the leak we found was just from the valves not fully seating. We are replacing the exhaust lifters and putting everything back together. I hope this is the last time. What a learning experience this has been.
