I recently did my first oil change on my new Ram and went with Mobil 1 5w20, I plan on changing oil at 6000 miles then start going every 8-10K miles.

Check out schaffer's website and look at the specs and compare. Schaffer is by far the best oil on the market. Amsoil is great oil as well as royal purple but not nearly as good as schaffer. Make sure to check out the diesel test that schaffer did on an 18 wheeler.

anyone else check this out?

DO NOT exceed 8k between oil changes. I work at a Ford, Dodge, Jeep dealer and we have had a rash of ****heads coming in with engine problems on their 2011 and a few 12 hemi's because they think they can run their oil 10k+, granted most of them are farmers and their trucks idle (low speed driving) alot Chrysler has sent us (as tech's) information pertaining to maintenance records showing no more than 8k LOF intervals, if the intervals exceed 8k powertrain warranty may become null and void due to consumer breaching maintenance contract. Most of the issues have started in the MDS system as the solenoids control oil pressure to the lifters with **** oil the system does not operate properly.
To be honest as a heavy line tech doing most of the engine and trans work, maintain your vehicle. Don't push the envelope and pay the consiquence later

I going to say this could be true with cheap Dino oil and cheap filter but with high quality oil like Mobil 1 and Amsoil I just don't see the point of changing oil so much it is a waste of money IMO. MDS sucks anyway I will just turn it off.

I do agree oil is cheap and fixing things broken by not maintaining is not.

Here are pictures of distance filter after just under 8000 miles. It did the job well and the oil was still clean! I am just so impressed with the oil after all these miles including many short trips. Ram is the same story this filter was off the Journey. I am sure the Mobil op referenced would yield similar results.

Right out of the owner's manual:
NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change
intervals exceed 8,000 miles (13 000 km) or six months,
whichever occurs first.

I wouldn't want to risk my warranty by changing oil at longer intervals than that.

ive heard both sides of the story , ya you could probably run it that long but who wants to even test those grounds, and what happens if you had to take your truck in for warrenty cause of some sort of engine problem, they look at your oil and say why is it so dirty? no warrenty for u! and you say well mobile one guarentees 15000 .... hmmmm not to sure if id want to even chance, at least if you do it at 6000 im sure they couldnt say squat! yathe oil can still look good at 10000 but we alll know oil all breaks down , u could change your oil and not drive for 6 months and the oil will be **** id stick with manufacturers recomendations on any maintenance, i do mine at every 5000 - 6000 km 5-20 mobil

Over on a Harley forum I sometimes frequent I hear the same arguments that oil can run forever. No one seems to remember the oil filter which will be pretty well closed up by 5-6000 miles. Then the oil bypasses the filter and you are running unfiltered oil most of the time. Very bad.

May be overkill, but 3-5000 miles tops for oil and filter changes. If you seem to have some desire to go more than 5, then change at least the filter and top off. 10 years of working at a Chevy dealer on cars and trucks I saw a whole lot of engine problems related to extended oil changes.

I totally agree that the filter is where the problem will come from and not the oil. My dad manages a business that transports workers for the railroad and when he took it over they were going 28000 miles on an oil change. They use synthetic and it is mostly road miles but he has since adopted 15000 mile oil changes as 28000 was to him and to me unheard of. He has about half 80% of the fleet gm full size vans and the other caravans. He jokes saying the gm's use enough oil that it is all fresh by a month of use.

I go 6K on my Hemi Challenger and will change on my Ram at 7,500.

I don't think the savings realized by stretching the time/miles between changes is worth the possible outcome.

I have a really hard time beleiving the claims of any oil for 10,000+ mile change intervals.
I run Amsoil 5W20 XL and will change eveyr 5,000km. It's cheap insurance.
I've run Castrol Syntec in my car until recently, doing 5k intervals, and the engine runs like new at 245,000 after 11 years of aggressive driving and auto-x.

It is not the oil I worry about it is the filter that will be used up.

If you are really concerned, just run a sample of the oil into a CAT dealership, or somewhere else that does oil analysis, and they will tell you if your intervals are too long, or too short.
