So awhile back I traded my 2008 CTD Big Horn for a new 2012. It took a lot of back and forth with myself, the dealer and my wife, and but I got the deal I wanted on a crew cab Laramie 2500, pretty much fully loaded; in black of course!

So the day comes I bring the new truck home:

And my wife (Momma) with a frown says "It's nice, but it doesn't look mean like the old truck" So I explain how much nicer it is than the 3rd gen but basically the same under the sheet metal, talked about the warranty blah blah blah.... So then she says "Can you make it look mean like the old one?"

Yes. Yes I can!

With that said, this will be the "Momma said make it look mean" build thread.

Okay a few impressions on the new truck Vs. the 3rd Gen. Been driving it for a few months now. 3k miles on truck since Dec 11th.

1. The current Laramie interiors are light years ahead of the old truck. Crazy nice, awesome features, build quality/materials are very plush and it smells good to boot!

2. Ride quality is mildly improved, however with the hydro mounts, the cab and cowl do not shake. Road isolation is much improved.

3. This truck has the Cummins HO motor. 800 ft/lb of Torques, and you can feel the difference, especially at 1500 rpm's. Tows a light trailer like it's not there. I did have a fair bit of sway (more on that in a bit).

On to the first mods:

So my truck was prepped little from the dealer. The first mod I did was to remove all the wax pen checks and adhesive from in transit wrapping. Came off nice with rubbing alcohol and elbow grease.

Next up was the removal of the front plate. I hate how those look, and the addition of some old sponsor stickers:

I then updated the software/Gracenotes on the MyGig 730N. Works great. No funny business from the radio. Shows way more album art now. I also added some photos of my little family and a favorite place to the HDD.

You can find the directions and links to do this for all the MyGig radios at: www.jeepgarage.com forums.

Last for this installment, I had the windows tinted. 5% on all the back windows and 20% on the fronts. All metallic film for ultimate UV protection. Makes driving at night and at high sun in the mountains much more bearable.

Shortly after buying this truck, my wife and I moved our family from Vacaville California to Steamboat Springs Colorado. A move we ABSOLUTELY DO NOT REGRET.
ge5ahe5y.jpg

In January, with about 1k miles of commute driving on the truck, we packed up a large UHaul trailer with about half our stuff (staging Vaca home with rest), hooked that little trailer to the Cummins and off we went on a 1060 mile one way drive with our dogs, cats and fish. The powerpoint plug in the Ram came in handy to run the pumps and air stone for the fish. We of course drove in the worst weather, snow storming like crazy the whole way. Highway 80 beyond Park City the scariest part with the big rigs going 80+ mph through the blizzard.

The new truck pulls the trailer like it's not there, accelerating with authority up the steepest grade and the exhaust brake keeping speed in check on downgrades. As I said above, I did notice some sway I think related to trailer tongue angle being too high. I've read a guy with a 1500 noticed a sensitivity these trucks have to tongue weight. I'll certainly be investing in a lower drop hitch before I tow my race car to Colorado, and later a gooseneck/5th wheel setup in the future.

All that being said we all made it safely and in supreme comfort thanks to the new Laramie Ram 2500.

Catching you all up to current. Wanted to start this thread ages ago but been busy with the move, unpacking, new work etc

Haven't been spending much on the truck for a bit now because I've been busy upgrading the AV stuff in the house,
LG Google TV:
ra5a8ete.jpg

And enjoying the mountain/small town lifestyle, snowboarding a bit. Weather seems to alternate between snowing or bluebird sunny about every other day or so. This is about 5 minutes from house

And for my sisters wedding we went to Maui (bummer right!)

Before I traded in my old truck, I was able to take all the mods off of it (CAI, Tuner). I went ahead and bought some new stuff too.

While this is the "Momma said make it look mean" build thread, looks are for trailer queens.

To quote the immortal Q-Tip (Tribe Called Quest): "Yo, I got a dog that bites, f*@k the barkin". As you can guess this installment is all about performance.

I reappropriated my CAI from the old truck and with a quick call to Banks, I was able to order all the updates for the new truck. Some might say why Banks? I got a great second hand deal on this enabling me to get the scoop too, below retail for the CAI alone and their build quality is up to OEM standard.

A little cleaning with Simple Green, and on it went.. Easy peasy.

I also installed a sweet Flo-Pro 5" turbo back exhaust with muffler and O2 bungs, (this one in stainless steel) removing the heavy and crappy flowing DPF/Catalytic system.
a5ahesyv.jpg

For those tackling this at home, it can be done with standard hand tools without cutting the stock exhaust, just remember to (mostly) remove the tranny cross member or you'll never get the stock DP out without cutting.

While I was in there I installed a turbo blanket and wrapped the downpipe in thermo wrap. A trick I learned with the race car. Helps keep heat energy in the hot side of turbo and DP for quicker turbo spool up.

Last for the night of mods.. and the Coup de Grace for this installment. I also reappropriated my H&S Minimaxx Race tuner from the old truck. Fortunately I bought his this tuner before all the EPA weirdness, so the High Sulfur Content tunes were already unlocked. One quick firmware update, a software update for the 2012 and tranny software unlock and I installed it into the new (and very slick) over head pod.

I'd have to say the truck SOUNDS BOSS with this setup. Have only driven in town so far, but the difference is pretty night and day. Truck lays down way more power at surprisingly small throttle openings and the tranny tune really helps with traction. Where before I'd have to drop her into 4X to get into my snowy/icy parking spot at home, 2wd is no problem. The dog definitely has some bite!

Someone asked for info on my race car. It's a little olé 1995 Nissan 240sx. Currently a little 300hp turbo 2.4L motor with every supporting mod you could imagine (brakes, suspension electronics etc), but I've been contemplating changing the motor to a supercharged 4.5L (vh45) Infinity V8 like this guy did:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TACwPcT8HrI&feature=youtube_gdata_player

More info on that swap here:
www.v8nissans.com

Cheers for now!

Have you found or heard about "The Cave" yet? It is a locals only cave that is accessed only through someone's barn. I spent the winter of 1995 in that cave while working as a lift op. It has wooden floors and is always 70 degrees. It is damp though and smells sort of odd. The story goes that some old farmer found it and built his barn on it and used the cave to keep his sheep safe. I would wager probably 100 or more people lived in there with me in 1995. It is walking distance from the bottom lift shack.

I have to admit.. My wife makes it all possible. Best decision I've made in 40+ years.

A true companion and love of my life, I'd be just another deadbeat without her.

It's my wish everyone is so lucky!

Cheers

True that. Thanks...

A quick update... Just jumped on it up an on ramp in "Street" mode...

OMG... 4th gear wheel spin, traction control light blinking so fast that I might have a seizure..... Wow completely awesome upgrade!

Highly recommended.

Welcome aboard!
Beautiful truck to start, and VERY well thought out mods; nicely done if I may say so.

Q- where did you find the overhead pod??

Ordered the overhead pod straight off the H&S website. Matches factory headliner perfectly and comes with a longer HDMI cord to boot.

I would suggest using stronger velcro to fasten it to the windshield and the Minimaxx to it though.

Cheers,
