Yesterday I let a friend do a thermostat change at the house, he did it we used a gasket, it leaked. I scraped it off and put back killer orange high temp silicone gasket maker with no gasket, screwed and clamped, dry overnight, zero leak. Hoses sometimes need to be removed, and cleaned from inside out and whatever housing they go into, then put something like magic lube on there, it is an o ring stop leak type product, then clamp, we also did that because one of his hoses were leaking. All buttoned up now.

Sounds like your dealer doesn't know what the hell they are doing, save all old parts, of they replace something that doesn't need replacing, that is absolute fraud, contact bureau of auto repairs in your state.

Yeah it’s getting a bit out of hand. I wasn’t worried as much before this because I was still under warranty, but now this is out of my pocket. In reality, the truck was driving fine, other than the obvious leak. I’ll be out of the country for the week then be sure to contact bureau of auto repairs and find a new dealer/shop in the process.

THAT was a thought but w/o being there real hard. U know, maybe a loose bolt (s), not torqued properly, warped, bad gasket, Hmmmmmmmm

Gasket, you need to replace gasket everytime you replace it, dealers are notorious for not doing so. You could probably just use some gasket maker done. If you have oat and not hoat, then you should fix that asap. You may have hoat, but another larger issue is did the dealer put back oat into your hoat, at that point I'm flushing.


When you get the thermo stat off, put your finger around and see how slimey that is. I guess misery loves company, I will be doing a thermo stat for a friend this week.

Drain some off, it should be nice clear orange.

Different types of antifreeze, very different, make sure you get the right one.

From what little i've researched, somewhere 10-13 NOT SURE, they went to OAT. OLDER was HOAT. Please wait for someone who knows for sure to chime in.

I believe on the mopar website, you should be able to download an owners manual. If you don't have yours.

4 basic coolants, iat old stuff, hoat newer then iat stuff stuff, and oat newest stuff or longest lasting, and asian which is hoat but absent some items for specific reasons, Bottom line, they don't mix. 6 mos ago my friend dumped dex into his nissan, I told him wrong stuff he said whatever, it started over heating about 4 mos later, last week we flushed drained and new thermo and put back zerex asian, everything is a ok. Yeah there are some other coolants, but this is what manu's use by year.

btw, I wouldn't put dex into a fca product, so I'm not saying you should use this chart, just use it to identify year, research the correct coolant. fca purple is a dex clone, but it aint dex.

Zerex g0-5 is probably the best coolant made, not the longest lasting so you should flush every 40k miles, but the least likely to gum **** up or corrode. Dex can gum up and iat can corrode because you have to change it so often, and if you forget, it goes bad quick.. It is a HOAT, so either that or Mopar HOAT, and I'm very glad my truck takes this. Our systems are hard to flush, engine bolts are very hard to get to, especially drivers side, so unless you are a glutton for punishment, it is best just to do a series of dilute type flushes. I get mine full strength and mix it with distilled water 50/50 before putting it in truck. I am always at 50/50 mix no matter how much I get out.

Thanks so much for the information. When I do need to do something coolant related I will be sure to do a good research on the coolant type and what is required. I had only seen about 4 different colors.

Zerex go5 or mopar hoat is all you need to know, either way it is very cheap and very necessary. Drain some of the radiator peacock and check the color. It should be a nice clear orange/red. Now, the one thing is if you use go5 it will change the color, so you need to get used to that gold, but it's cheaper then mopar hoat. same stuff, just a different color.

If you get Mopar, make darn sure it says 5 year and not 10 year.
