 It was all my fault! I stopped by my local gas station yesterday to top off the tank before the hurricane induced increase happened. The wind caught my door and the door hit the pump nozzle. In addition to a miniscule chip of paint being removed, there was also an inch long scratch in the clear coat. I immediately drove home and got out the touch-up bottle that came with the truck. By the third application, I had made a mole-hill into a mountain! The truck only has 600 miles and needless to say, I was sick. This morning I stopped by the dealer to see if their touch-up guy could maybe make it better. My service manager suggested going to the body shop. I was expecting my body shop guy to recommend a complete door repaint. He got out the sandpaper, water, polish and polisher and went to work. Within 15 minutes, all that showed was the missing paint chip the size of a pin head. He carefully applied the matching PMD DuPont paint and before long the door looked like new again. If the sun hits it just right I know its there, but it is truly just a speck rather than a huge blemish that I would see every time I went to open my door. When I asked him what the bill would be, he smiled and said, "I'm sure we'll catch up with you eventually!" :) Needless to say, I recommend this young man to anybody who'll listen!

Very nice. It's nice to see that some places still take care of people without worrying about how much they can get away with charging.

My bad, but better!

The young man who owns the bodyshop is a former student and was quite the "wild child" growing up. He has turned into a successful businessman and has always been very likeable. He is getting almost all the body work from my Ram dealer. When I worked part-time at the dealership after I retired, they always preached "relationships." Building good relationships is a two-way street that rewards everyone in the longrun. I don't even notice the speck anymore and am again "happy!" Hope to post some pix over the weekend. Thanks for the comments.

That's great to hear that there are still business owners that are willing to go the extra mile to take care of their customers. Glad you were able to get it fixed up.

I have dealt with the same sales manager since 1986. Since the early 90s, he has always shared invoice pricing with me. Along with that, I know that Chrysler's philosophy is to build "positive relationships." (I worked at the dealership part-time off and on after retiring from 30+ years of teaching.) With that said, I have always expected to start from "invoice" and many times, depending on their sales quota, I have been able to get some or all of the "holdback" stripped from the deal. If you have access to the dealer's invoice sheet, you should be able to see the "holdback." Also, several times, he also secured an "employee pricing discount sheet. Concerning trades, my guy uses his books and I use mine(KBB, Edmunds, etc.). We are usually pretty close, but sometimes we are hundreds apart. Compromise always happens and neither of us would do the deal if we didn't like the numbers. Finally, I always expect a tube of touch-up paint, a new cap, 3 years of LOF, splash guards and employee pricing on all accessories. In exchange, I always go to the dealership for repairs and recommend the dealership to anyone who will listen. They take care of me and I do what I can for them. They don't make much on a new car, so referrals and return business is what helps the dealer show a profit. If you can't build a mutually positive relationship with your dealer, you need to tell them you'll be looking for a dealership that will accomodate your wants and needs. Just my thoughts!
