Default operation for ABS failure does not affect basic braking. I.E. your brakes will operate to stop your vehicle.

How many owners are certain when or if their ABS had failed ?
I agree with ya, I can say in my 2006 that from the time I bought it new in 2006 until I sold in in 2021, no matter how hard I hit the brakes the ABS only worked a few times and the times it did I was on compact snow & ice roads...

In reply to your comment “this is what everyone that own older vehicles deal with” we own a 2018 that has less that 30,000 miles and has been repaired twice already. The replacement part is defective and unavailable until Feb-March 2024.
Maybe cars these days are pre-aged.... Nah, they use recy

I owned a 1993 GMC Suburban SLE with 4WAL Kelsey-Hayes system ABS. I bought it in 1996 with about 90,000 miles on it for my wife to drive. Over time, she would complain that the brakes "acted funny" sometimes as she came to normal stops at a red light, for instance.
Naturally, since it never did it when I drove it, I shrugged it off as maybe an issue with road conditions.
That is, until, in February, 1998, I was driving it on a 2 lane black top road on one of those days of misty drizzle rain and tried to slow down/ stop behind an F-250 who was stopped with his signal on to turn left across traffic. I hit the brakes and found out what "acted funny" meant as the ABS engaged when it SHOULD not have. This added just enough distance to my stop that I rear-ended the Ford.

The damage to the Ford, due to an under chassis receiver hitch with the receiver/ball in place, His damage was just a scratched chrome rear bumper and a minor tailgate dent. My suburban lost the front fascia, and the A/C condenser and radiator were impaled. Needless to say, he drove away after info was exchanged, and my Suburban was towed to the body shop!

Sometime later, I noticed that the brake linings needed attention during oil change service. When I pulled the rear drums off, I found a seeping wheel cylinder on the passenger rear brake. The shoes were wet, and VOILA!, there was my "acting funny" AHA moment. After repairing the brakes with hydraulic repair and system bleed, the "acting funny" issue was gone! In a strange twist of irony, a tornado deposited a tree down the center of the roof of this vehicle in the same fashion that Tim Allen (Taylor) had dropped the steel beam onto Jill's 1955 Nomad wagon, thus totaling it out!

Like so many other owners of 2014-16 Rams, I am searching in vain for an ABS module (Mopar #68228991AD). I was told by one of their CSR's that that module has been DC'ed. So I wrote a sharp letter to Mopar and copied the NHTSA. Here is the text of that letter for anyone who wishes to copy and paste it.

RE: Mopar part #68228991AD (discontinued)

Sir or Madam:

I am writing to your Company regarding the lack of availability of this part, the ABS Control Module for 2014-2016 Ram 1500 trucks.

My truck, like those of numerous other Ram owners, has a malfunctioning ABS Control Module. Because of this malfunction, the ABS and cruise control do not work. In turn, this places me and other owners of this vehicle in an unsafe situation in that lack of an operating ABS system is conducive to skidding and accidents. Some owners have even reported that they cannot drive their vehicles due to locked brakes which resulted from this malfunction.

I have tried every source in existence in my efforts to find a replacement module, but I have been totally unsuccessful. I have been told by one of your Customer Service representatives that your Company is “…unable to maintain a complete inventory for an indefinite period of time and the lower the demand, the less likely it is we will have stocked parts. As such, the part you are requesting is no longer in our inventory.”

This is absolutely appalling. Apparently, several thousand Ram owners who paid tens of thousands of dollars for their trucks are not important enough to your Company for it to provide very necessary support for their products. I am thoroughly disgusted with Chrysler/Stellantis and definitely will NOT purchase another vehicle from your Company.

Sincerely,

cc: National Highway Transportation Safety Administration

I’m having the same problem on my 2014 Big Horn. Was told by the dealer that the parts are under engineering review. Supposed to had the issue resolved by April 20 2025 which has already passed. The problem is getting worse with the rear brakes activating simultaneously causing a wiggle effect.

I filed an NHTSB complaint about safety and forcing Stellantis to issue a recall. I recommend you all do the same because Stellantis is doing nothing about this.

Part # 68228991AD

PART ON HOLD UNTIL ENGINEERING REVIEW IS COMPLETE, EXP - MAR 20TH, 2025

The ABS, Traction Control, Trailer Breaking lights are on also impacting Adaptive Cruise Control making them all inoperable, even though the truck is still able to be drive, albeit unsafely. I took it to my local repair shop and was told the ABS Controle Module, part number 68228991AD was identified as bad and in need of replacing at approximately $2000 and that the part is on indefinite backorder. I tried to locate the part on my own and there is in fact a nationwide backorder. After further investigation, I found multiple owners on Ram forums either having or have had the same problems. On one parts website, I found this message regarding the part:

This is not just an issue with 2014 Ram trucks, but extends to other model years using the same part number. This is a huge safety issue that should be addressed through a recall and the NHTSB has the power to right this wrong. Stellantis is doing what large corporations do and protecting their bottom line at the expense of putting customers' safety at risk. We are the little guys with limited financial means and power, to go up against a large corporation to get them to act and do what is right. Please advise soonest.

You'll be hard put to force a recall due to "Safety". The service brakes continue to function just fine, thus, the vehicle is NOT rendered "unsafe". Popping corn...

Hi Part # 68228991AD is finally in transit, We have seen orders from March already completed. There are a few hundred pieces in transit and only 6 backorders at this time.

If you need one I suggest you place your order to reserve one.

I have a 2016 Ram with ABS, traction control and check engine lights all on. I was told by my local mechanic that the ABS module was the cause of this and that I would need to have one installed by the dealer. Of course, the dealer does not have them. I placed an "order" in September of 2025, paid $500 and, I guess, took my place in line. As of February 20th...no joy.

I contacted BacktoRoad and they have quoted me a price of $1,200 for the complete assembly. Ouch! Before spending THAT money, I've scheduled an inspection by the local dealer to determine if the module is the cause of the problem. If so, decision time. I don't feel comfortable driving the truck for extended periods and it is in otherwise great condition.

I'm going to use the letter template and contact MOPAR and NHTSA but I doubt that it will make any difference.

Given the number and ongoing failures of this unit, this is shameful. Fingers crossed....

Seems wrong that a ten-year-old Ram truck can not get the correct part for a vehicle, but nothing surprises me with Stellantis who is running this once great and respected car and truck company six feet under.
