I'm looking to get a bed cover for my new Ram 1500. If I go retractable, I really like the retrax. But, I've also been looking at folding covers (cheaper and don't have the canister to eat up space). The one that seems to have the right combination of features for me seems to be the Fold-a-cover Elite G4. I really like how you can open the front in addition to the back, and I especially like how the front opening panel works in conjunction with their personal caddy option, plus the latch/lock system seems to be more secure and simpler to operate than than most (no tailgate opening required).

I was pretty sure the Fold-a-cover was what I wanted, but I stopped by a local accessory place, and the rep basically said that its crap. They pushed the bakflip products really hard instead. I've seen lots of good stuff about the bak products, but it just doesn't have the features I like in the foldacover. It only opens from the rear, you have to open the tailgate to unlatch it, and at 10"x10" their version of an integrated toolbox might as well be a shoebox not to mention you have to open the whole cover to get to it.

Their negative opinion about fold-a-cover seemed to not be from a recent experience, and I know they've made changes in the last couple of years. Their two biggest issues were that they aren't as low profile as the backflip, and they don't like how they accordion fold instead of each panel just flipping over. I'm not sure either of those two things really matter to me at all vs. the added features. So, I'm looking for other feedback before I write anything off.

Anyone have feedback on the fold-a-cover, or it vs the backflip, or maybe going with retrax and giving up the bed space the canister takes and finding a low profile toolbox like the tonneaumate to go with it would be a better option than any of the folding covers? Help me out. Thanks!

I don't have either but what about the retrax. I don't know much about it easier but I did like that it rolled up but didn't use a canister. I know not a lot of help but something to throw out there.

I have the backflip. It will get water through the seams at car wash. You are supposed to open the first segment whenever closing the tailgate, slight PITA. I do like how the aluminum version can hold several hundred pounds on top of it when closed.

copied from a recent thread on backflip vs undercover :
I have the Undercover Flex and have no leak issues. It is very similar to the Bakflip, but when you fold it up, it doesn't rest against the cab and rub your paint, it props up vertically in place and is held there by 2 props. When folded up like that, I have full use of my bed except the last 4 or 5 inches, but ATV wheels would roll under that.

See link for pics folded up:
UnderCover Flex

Oh, and when you fold it once or twice, you can strap it in place so the wind won't grab it going down the road.

Pics below of the Bakflip and how it rests against the cab when fully folded and no way to secure when partially folded making is acceptable to wind lift.

I have the Backflip as well, the water seems to leak from the crack between the tailgate and the bed sides. Minimal water and looks great. When folded up, it taps the back window which is why they send some foam pads with it as well, nothing touches my paint. That being said, I do not think it was worth the amount they charged, but it protects the stuff in my bed so I'm happy.

I just got the BakFlip from Morrie on here & couldn't be happier. Mine doesn't leak, folds all the way up for total access & I like how it won't open unless the tailgate is open. Since the tailgate locks, I might as well use that feature.

I have the extang trifecta and have no problems. Easy to install and easy to open and close. And I love the look of the signature series cloth I got vs leather

I have the bakflip and the only time a little water gets in is when I bring it to the car wash. The water is hitting it sideways. Nothing when it rains. I absolutely love mine.

I have the undercover flex folding cover, I too wanted the fold a cover, but I couldn't find a place that sold it and the accessory store mainly sold under over products, cost me 1k installed.. I have had it for about 4 months, and have had it through 5 car wash"s and 2 huge rain storms.. it simply just doesn't leak water into the bed. the rail drains work really well. I have driven with it fully open and in the Up position and partially open and it does just fine in both positions, doesn't lean against the cab wich is a must have. my dog " 70 pounds and my brothers dog 100pounds" love to lay on top of it. for the price I love it. you just got to decide what features u want and what u really need. best of luck

I have a 1 pc but when I went through the shopping process I was convinced I was going to buy the Undercover Flex if I bought a tri fold based on reviews, features, and talking to owners. Good luck.
