So I have a 2014 5.7 L with 156,000 miles on it. I just replaced the transmission back in January and I had a valve spring break, causing my push rod, lifter, valve all to bend and damage the piston and cylinder wall. Got a quote for a re-manufactured engine installed $9500. Just wondering if anybody has had this happen and what you did when your motor is toasted.

I haven't had that happen with any vehicle I've owned, but then again I don't tend to keep many of them for the long term. Sounds like you need to weigh your options, like many people who keep their vehicles longer then the average owner. For me it would depend on how much I like the truck versus buying something newer. I would also look at the cost of replacing the engine versus the cost of replacing the truck. You won't be replacing it for less than $10k unless you get something older than what you have. What kind of condition is the truck in (other than needing an engine)?

Well, you know you've got a good transmission. If the rest of the truck is in good shape and you still like it, I'd shop around for a crate engine install. $10k doesn't go real far in the truck market these days. A third of that would go just to sales tax on anything worth buying.

I was in same thought on this,
TRuck has 166,*** 2013 5.7 hemi
at 122,*** had cam shaft lifters replacd then at 165 tranny went out.
I opt to replace tranny because I knew the truck, motor was strong and i bought truck new.
To me if was cheaper to replace the tranny then eplace truck.
PLUS i didnt want the new hemi with e torque
you have to do whats best for you and how you feel about your truck

Especially after seeing the way that valve guide shattered, new crate plus new intake manifold.

DO NOT get a rebuilt motor.

If the body is in good shape, even better. Try to find a similar miles/conditioned truck, at least $10 - $15K, with no guarantee as to engine condition.

So where would be a good place to get a new 5.7 crate motor? My dealership like I said quoted me $5,175 for a re-manufactured motor then with parts and labor etc it was $9500 out the door. Is there a big problem with a re-manufactured motor with a 3 year no fault warranty?

Very well put dan. I went through the rebuild and bring it back to almost like new on a GM in the 90's. Did the figures and could have used the money to pay half down on a new truck.

Ever heard of a cam failure on an engine that's been mds deleted?

I've been watching and have heard of one yet.
Interesting.

But I have heard of non-MDS lifters failing in MDS engines from time to time. I wonder what's up with that.

I'm not saying they don't happen. I was just wondering if you've heard of any.

Because I haven't. Yet.

If it hasn't been a problem, my best guess would be that the solenoid block off plates and lack of mds solenoids, allow full flow of pressurized oil to the lifter bores, all the time.

Some of that high pressure oil has to find its way down the lifter bodies and into, hopefully, the needle bearings in the roller. But, that's all just a guess based on a couple minutes of pondering.

MDS has been the standard for about 20 years now, so it's not really surprising people aren't logging in to the forums to mention it. There's not a ton of non-MDS motors out there any longer.

If you just need to see a complaint of one from 'back in the day': https://www.justanswer.com/dodge/1x...00-5-7-magnum-hemi-camshaft-bearing-shot.html

Perhaps ironically, MDS fixed an issue that pre-MDS hemis suffered from: weak valve springs. The upgraded valve springs break waaaaay less often.

Does anyone have a good source in or near Edmonton Alberta for one of these new crate engines or do I need to order it up from the States? If you were going to buy a re manufactured crate engine in Canada, who would you get it from? Thanks
