I have decided to step away from Ford and purchase my first Ram. I am going with the Laramie trim but have questions concerning engine choice. I know the Hemi is back but have been reading about the hurricane engine thermostat issues among a few other things. Was curious if you guys and gals feel that they have addressed the issues I have heard about.
Also any other input for a Ram newbie would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

If I was buying new right now I’d avoid the Hemi because you can’t get one without etorque. I’m not sure how big of an issue the thermostat is on ‘26 Hurricane equipped models. It’s likely they’ve at least attempted to address those issues but I haven’t seen anything that definitively confirms that. Ram tends to be pretty tight lipped about that kind of thing.

Just curious why you “decided to step away from Ford”? In addition to a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited I also have a 2014 F150 Limited 3.5 EcoBoost we bought used three years ago. I’ve been really happy with that truck but it only gets driven a couple thousand miles a year. I’ll be in the market for a new truck soon and was looking at my options.

I got a 2025 Big Horn with the SST SO motor in July. I have had exactly zero problems with it at 12000 miles. It replaced a 2017 Big Horn with the Hemi that was the most reliable vehicle that I have owned.

This truck is quiet, smooth and powerful as I need. pulls my camper and snowmobile trailer very well.

I have a 2016 F-150XLT which I have used for personal and work with only a few small issues. I'm retired now and want a more comfortable truck to do some traveling. I looked at the new Fords and feel the better bang for the buck is the Ram for the equipment offered at the same price point. Comparing the Ford Lariat and Platinum to the Ram Laramie I like the Ram offerings. I also like the looks of the Night package. My dad always drove Dodges and I'm afraid I'm turning into my dad LOL.

I have a 12' enclosed trailer and a aluminum car trailer that I tow a 2500 pound toy on. Sounds like it will not be an issue as your camper is probably heavier. Thanks for your response.

3.0 SO
Just left a 22 302a XLT with the 2.7EB payload package (3.5 yrs) for a 26 RAM Laramie Level 1, 3.0 SO, 3.92 gearing.

2.7 EB payload package gives the 2.7EB a 3.73 gearing which in turn makes the truck more responsive and looked for a RAM 3.0 with 3.92 gear for that reason. After driving the new RAM for now the short distance of just under 600 miles have found this engine preforms more like a 3.5EB which comes stock with 3.55 gearing. Drove 3.5 EB Max tows for well over 30K miles. Feel the 3.0 SO responds like a 2.7EB but hauls like a 3.5EB. That said wouldn't specifically look for another 3.92 geared 3.0 SO because a 3.55 would and is more than likely a good overall match for the 3.0 SO engine.

Went with the Laramie because a Big Horn even in Level 2 has a manual passenger seat and my spouse requires more adjustment for her back than a manual seat can deliver.

Owned 18 502a Lariat and a 19 701a Platinum and went back to a XLT 302a because of all the gimmicks Ford had gotten into putting into the higher level trucks the 18 was a NON moon roof truck the 19 had a moon roof and NEVER going there again with ANY MFG. Mostly the reasoning behind going Laramie level 1. 2ndly owned a early 21 Power BOAST and dumped it in 9 months because basically Auto mechanics are just that AUTO MECHANICS and not electrical Gremlin chasers.

Got the Bed package which is basically bed lights and a step on the drivers side a very nice adjustable tie down system along with a factory bed liner.

The RAM came with floor mats which basically with all floor liners today render the 2 in the floor rear storage boxes a place for hidden treasures.

Still learning the U connect. Missing is the temp knobs to adjust heat which is either buttons or on the screen to change. Haven't quite figured out the heated seats and steering wheel to come on with the next start at the same level as when turning off the vehicle. Basically got the heat set at 74F vents at defrost and floor and don't touch it. Heated driver seat and steering wheel now come on with each start but on high which means you need to do a on screen adjustment to lower each on every start up. It has been down to -23F and highs in the low single digits so this is good enough until warmer weather. Adjusted the blind spot monitoring to have a auditable alarm while learning the new mirrors. Word of caution on the mirrors they reach out a little further than on a a F150 with NON towing mirrors and backing out of a garage door go slow but the Laramie does have power folding mirrors. Do like the spot mirror in the upper corner. Tow mirrors are not required for what is being towed here.

Gauge cluster Personally like the analog look and still figuring out the right configuration as RAM is a little more flexible on the where and what is seen. Lane sensing is on the right side of the speedometer with 2 vertical lines if they turn yellow and you feel a little shutter in the steering wheel do not be alarmed it is a warning. Do have a pet peeve on a the gauge for transmission temp it is BACKWARDS reading H to the left C to the right which is found to be very confusing. This will be REMOVED when it warms up.

Right now mostly using 4Auto which is definitely nice to have back my MPG is 14mpg. Cold short trips don't help this at all. My one concern was warm up temp in these cold central Wisconsin mornings which is very similar to the warm up time of the 2.7EB which was way better than the 3.5EB.

Would I do it again Yes and would I go 3.0 SO over Hemi. Exhaust sound HEMI hands down rest to early to tell but if 3.0 SO works as good or better than the past 5 turbo powered F 150's I would stay with the 3.0 SO.

Build a RAM 1500 on line, if the pop up comes up go for it it's a $1K rebate, then if you find a in stock 3.0 SO like I did check for the acquisition rebate on qualified vehicles from GM, Ford and Toyota. This is another $2K rebate. Then while on the Build site search for discounted inventory around your area. Went out 100 miles to find this truck for less than the Big Horns being sold locally. Had 3 colors in mind this Graphite, Black and the weird darkish Blue. There is a similar truck still on the dealers lot in White but not my bag.

Now a couple of years back Ford dropped the 5.0 in their Tremors only to bring it back and dealers had some mighty fine discounts on 3.5EB Tremors and just about did it but was in the back of my mind kinda RAM hunting then. So if history is history one may in the future find some handsome discounts on Rebel 3.0 SO trucks.

Good luck.

Heard a rumor we all eventually turn into our parents. Like all them commercials on TV, lol.

I try not to, but I do find if I think about it doing stuff like my Dad did, around the house and stuff (hee hee).

I have become more like my Dad in a number of ways. Considering it a good thing...

My camper weighs about 7000 pounds when loaded and ready for a trip. You need to understand that you are pulling something relatively heavy, slow down a bit, and leave extra room for stopping. Try to anticipate what some of the loonies on the road might do when merging, or around intersections. Take it easy on long grades, and its no problem.

On the subject of lower rear gears. I don't think its really a big deal on these trucks. The transmission has eight gears, not like the old three or four speeds of years ago. If extra torque is needed, the truck just holds the lower gears a bit longer, and you move along just fine.

On my Ninth Ram and 56th Dodge pickup. The only problem I've had is with one of the 2022's, nothing major but always little problems. Have been really happy with them over the years.

I have a 2025 RAM 1500 Laramie that I bought new last February. Have not experienced any problems with my Hurricane engine, which now has 11,800 miles on it. I changed my oil myself, and the only oil I could find that meets ALL of the Owner's Manual Spec's (besides the expensive Mopar brand) is Valvoline Advanced 0W20 Full Synthetic.

Couple month back I also switched from Ford. Transmission went after 4 years. Prior to that had same transmission in GM product - I believe they codeveloped it- go after a few years. The 8 speed on the Ram as I understand it is more reliable. I have had zero problems so far.

How heavy is your camper you tow? I have one also and have no issues. It's the exact same year and motor you have. My camper is just under 8,000lb fully loaded. NO issues.

I traded in my 2017 1500 Ram Big Horn 5.7 Hemi last October for a 2025 1500 Ram Laramie (hurricane). I've got about 3K miles on it and ran into my first problem. It would not start when hot. Turned over but it sounded like no fuel or firing. I waited until it cooled down at which point it started. I immediately drove it back to the dealer who determined that it was a bad power distribution center (PDC) which fortunately was covered by the warranty. The issue I had was that it took 3 weeks to get the part in and they had no loaners left for me to use. I have no issue as anything mechanical can and will eventually break. My issue is that I feel Stelantis should have parts more readily available in their supply chain. Other than that, I feel the it has plenty of power and it compares to my old 5.7 Hemi in that area.

I find it hard to believe they have not fixed the thermostat and other teething issues with the Hurricane.
I am soon going to replace my 19 Ram Longhorn and not going with the Hemi because I hate the etorque which I presently have.
