I own or have owned a hemi with a lifter or cam tick

Based on many forum requests, let's see what we get focusing only on lifter and cam ticks.

It’s common to hear a tick at start-up. I’ve heard brand new trucks on dealership lots do it. But it goes away after a couple seconds. This is different from the tick that happens when there are cam/lifter problems. But people often confuse the two. There are also broken exhaust manifold bolts or cracked exhaust manifolds that sound similar and are also mistakenly identified as hemi tick. My point is that if you really want a meaningful poll, you might ask for people who have had diagnosed cam/lifter failures.

Mine had 5 broken manifold bolts, AND lifter failure. Had her rebuilt and she runs like a scalded dog.
Here's a sound clip:
Confirmed lifter #3 failure
Needle bearings failed. Normal lifter on the left.

Even after rebuild it still makes a lot of ticking and clacking. Hemis are just noisy engines. Actual lifter failure is quite rare. There are literally millions of these engines on the road with no problems at all.

Other manu's have neither tick which is really a knock in these numbers. First and last hemi for me, no I wouldn't buy modern Ford and chevy either. But my tick showed up at 3500 miles and was told normal, that pile of cr@p will happen to this guy ONCE, that's it ONCE. I wouldn't care if it was exhaust or lifter, ONCE. Other manu's have neither in the numbers we have, period.

I agree with Burla, in that we shouldn't have any ticks regardless of the source.
However about 6-8 forum members requested a revised poll on just cam and lifter tics, so here it is, above...

I may be one of the lucky hemi owners, and I'm on #3 with no ticks ever.

For those who have cam and lifter ticks, it's usually a major repair, especially outside of warranty.

Hopefully common sense plus some info from forums can help guide hemi owners on whether to buy extended warranty.

In my book, if more than a moderate # of hemi owners actually get cam or lifter ticks, I'll be buying an extended warranty on my 24. Yes there are those who say that millions of hemis go tick free. That's hard to know or measure unless you are Stellantis.

Most forum members seem to believe owner forums overrepresent vehicle complaints. Probably so, but with all the interest and participation in the topic, extended warranty seems like a sure thing, at least for this owner.

We know unofficially it is about 50/50 historically here as far as the two ticks go. You can sumize approx 50% of the number in the other thread would be lifter ticks since this isn't taking off. Or about 38 out of 206 votes. In other words 17% rams having lifter tick, which just isn't good for the brand imo.

Guess guys got tired of seeing a tick poll. I have a buddy who is on the other 5th gen forum, so might suggest he try it over there.

If around 17% or almost 1 in 5 is a realistic number for cam or lifter ticks, against millions of hemis sold, then the possible number of owners experiencing cam or lifter ticks would be over a million easily.

Any poll with 69 respondents could be wildly inaccurate and non-representative, especially a self reporting survey.

There's 5 Hemi trucks / 2 Hemi Challengers and 1 Hemi Charger on my cresent, not including the ones i've had,if you include them, that's 12 Hemi's,and not 1 of them has ever had a cam/lifter issue, including my neighbour across the street who never plugs his truck in,and as soon as he starts it,it's foot to the floor whether it's -30 or +30,and he changes oil in it when the trucks says it's oil change time.So i think your poll isn't very accurate

Like I said above, this is a meaningless poll because the "hemi tick" isn't really defined. Your poll should be asking how many people have had a diagnosed cam/lifter failure.

Fleet management data backs it up, or at least it did when I had access to. At least in police fleets, transmissions caused more downtime and cost more money than camshaft issues. Low odds, but there's so many out there that even low odds create high totals over the bajillions of these motors in the wild.

The rate apparently has dropped with lifter/camshaft replacements. The last time I spoke with the parts manager at my dealership he said they only had one in the past eleven months and that was a 2013.
