Honestly I think I’m some cases. The 6.0 from ford caused a lot of bad reputation for diesels. They hear horror stories and assume it’s all diesels. Let’s be honest all these trucks work. Even my 5.7 does what I need it to. Just not efficiently. But to some that would be sufficient. As said a million times before. Buy whatever you want. Buy what you feel you need. If you’re like me buy the gasser and then realize yeah shoulda gone with a Cummins lol.

Yeah, all three engines work and it depends on personal preferences. On the flip side, you don't have to need a Cummins in order to buy one over a 6.4L just like you don't need a 6.4L to buy one over a 5.7L. Wanting it is plenty a reason to buy one.

I got bored at work and updated my chart for 100k miles, current fuel prices, updated diesel PM costs for those who do not get a work discount like me, and resale values at 100k. I also added in what it would cost using the recommended 89 octane in the 6.4L.

again, these are my prices for my area and my rates. Others may have different numbers.

Mtnrider what kind of mileage you getting on the hwy unloaded?

I am very happy with my 2015 2500 Ram 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel, I now have 37,000 miles on it. I get about 12 mpg while pulling my 13,000 lb. 5th wheel camper, and VERY VERY often I will get 20 ~ 22 mpg on the hiway unloaded driving 65 to 70 mph. I purchased a maintenance plan when I got the Ram for $190 and I pay $58 for oil & filter change up to 100k miles

It's the same here in my area of Georgia, under $3 a gallon for diesel. It's as cheap as the low grade gas.

I just switched from a 5.7 1500 Bighorn (my 2nd) to a CTD 2500 Bighorn Harvest Edition. I tow a 27' trailer with an unloaded weight of about 6600. My 1500 with 3.92s pulled it fine, but I knew it was there. And out here in the PNW it is pretty much continuous ups and downs through the mountains, once you get off I-5 or I-84. The 8 speed did just fine, especially turning the 3.92s, but it was working it, sometimes pretty hard. Towing mileage was around 10, give or take. Around town and highway average was 16ish.

While I have yet to put the new diesel through the towing paces yet (only had the truck a week and a half now) I did do a short pull out of town and back just to try to get my WD hitch dialed. About 20 miles, 2/3 of which were hilly back roads and the remainder highway; that gave me over 12.5mpg. In daily use I am averaging 18.5, unless I do a highway run- in which case the CTD will top 20mpg. I have 3.42s in it, so at 70mph I am turning just over 1500rpm.

I have about a .30 cent difference between the 89 octane I ran in the 5.7 and the diesel I am feeding the new truck. I don't even care. The diesel costs over time are irrelevant to me. No, I am not independently wealthy. Not even rich, by any stretch. But I know what serves my purpose well, and while I really did love that delmonico red Bighorn with the 5.7, I am much happier with my Bighorn Cummins. The extra costs are really trivial in the long run compared to how much better I feel about towing my trailer with a 3/4 ton Cummins over a half ton Hemi.

I love the gas vs Diesel debates!! For the record, I have both. My 2018 crew cab CTD (with 35x12.5x20 tires) gets better mileage than my 2014 5.7 Hemi single cab (with stock size tires). Isn't that weird??

This!!

I have a few friends that own 1500's at work. Three own the 5.7L and one owns a 3.6L. Not one of them tow anything heavier than a utility trailer. They were comparing fuel mileage one day at lunch and of course the 3.6L got the best. Doing the math on their fuel consumption, the 3.6L saves you several thousands in the long run.

The guy with the 3.6L started saying how the 5.7L is not needed if you don't tow and how much more it costs(similar to what some have stated here about the Cummins). The 5.7L guys pretty much said the same thing you did about how much better they feel behind the wheel is worth the extra costs even if the 3.6L is plenty enough for how they use their trucks and don't "need" a 5.7L. Of course the 3.6L guy did not get it.

If we had that, I would have gone right to the diesel. I’ve seen as much as a $.65/gallon disparity Diesel is usually ~$.15 more than E0, which is ~$.15 more than premium.

Given the average fuel economy for both on Fuelly.

With gas at $2.00 a gallon, diesel has to be around $.60 more to have the same cost per mile.

With gas at $2.50 a gallon, diesel has to be around $.70 more to have the same cost per mile.

With gas at $3.00 a gallon, diesel has to be around $.80 more to have the same cost per mile.

With gas at $3.50 a gallon, diesel has to be around $1.00 more to have the same cost per mile.

Same here in FL Diesel is pushing $3.25 to $3.65. I do go into Georgia and Alabama a lot which is cheaper for sure.

Ya know this makes a lot of more sense on some of these “diesel is way more expensive” opinions. It’s not much more here per gal in Texas than mid grade. So it pays off pretty darn fast. So I can see depending on where you live and price of fuel would come in to play if you’re worried about bottom line dollar price diff between gasser and diesel.
