I doubt you'll see a "softened" version of the Ram the next time around. The 4th Generation body styling harks backs to the era of muscle cars and the Ram's continued steady sales would suggest that it's an appealing approach to styling. I highly doubt you'll see a major departure in terms of styling on the next go around.

The 4th gen styling is what drew me to the Ram lineup initially. I had owned GMs exclusively up until I started doing research and purchased my 2011.

I think the 4th gens still look damn good.

That's F#$king ugly! I cant stand the avalanche and that looks just like it!

I had an Avalanche in 2004 or so, and yes... Even as I was buying it, I thought..Damn this thing is ugly!

But I have to say, it was one of the most versatile vehicles I've ever owned.

I'll say again, I'll believe it when I see it.

2010 Ford F150 Engine Options
4.6L 2 valve V8
4.6L 3 Valve V8
5.4L V8
6.2L V8

2016 Ford F150 Engine Options
3.5L V6
2.7L Turbo V6
3.5L turbo V6
5.0L V8

Its happening. Ford is projecting only 28 % of trucks sold in 2016 will have the 5.0 V8

There's a Ram display at the RV show I'm working at this weekend. I'll go over and pick their brains, see if they want to give any hints!

As a long-term Dakota owner I'd love to see FCA bring back a downsized version of the Dak. Reality is, a huge percentage of 1500 owners don't need that much truck to get groceries or make a Home Depot run. The Dakota was killed by high price, bloated size/weight and resultant mpg decline, a crummy styling change in 2005, and last but not least--poor QC. My next truck will be serving as a tow vehicle so I need a 1500 or 2500 but if not for towing, I'd like another truck the size and economy of the '88 Toyota PU I sold to get the Dak.

I traded a 2010 Dakota in for a 2013 Ram last September. 1 MPG difference at best, weight difference is less than half a ton, and far more power available in the Ram. I disagree with the quality control comment, but the interior upgrade going from the Dakota to the Ram was fantastic.

The only up side for the Dakota was the initial depreciation. It made them cheaper on the used market. Back when I bought my 2010 Dakota in 2012, I got it for almost $9000 less than what I would have paid for an equivalent 2010 Ram 1500.

With the redesign of the Jeep Wrangler coming up, one of the versions they are supposedly going to release is a Wrangler pickup. That will fill the "small" truck segment for FCA sufficiently, I bet. I doubt they'd release a new Dakota or other small/mid-sized pickup at the same time.

Also, FCA's real CAFE problem isn't with trucks-- it's that they aren't selling enough small/mid sedans and SUVs to boost their overall. Those missing sales are due to poor design and QC choices, IMHO.

Yup. When your number one sellers by far are the half ton trucks and the mid-sized SUVs (Jeep Grand Cherokee), your numbers for CAFE are never going to be good.

The chances of anything being leaked out about any of the changes is pretty slim. There's a lot of 2015/2016s sitting on dealer lots, that they will want to sell first. I'd suspect to hear something around the second quarter. If it is going to be a full redesign, they're going to go for a premium price for the first bit until they can clear out the last year models.

Google "Corporate Average Fuel Economy".

Basically it is the average fuel economy of a manufacturers total vehicle sales. There is a ever increasing median number they must meet and have to predict and average out what models of vehicles they sell to meet that average. Cannot have too many gas guzzlers sold if not selling enough economy models.

They should make an Omni that is priced around 10-12k something like the Fiesta, Yaris and Sonic that ultra price watchers and hyper milers would want. Something that could help sell to offset all the Rams and SUVs. Maybe even a little hybrid Dart or something.

For everyone who want's to quit RAM if the Hemi is dropped- guess what Chevy and Ford doing? They'll drop it too if it's that far.
Btw- CAFE makes it also possible to buy perks from companies who have so many, that they don't know what to do with it. Chrysler actually bought tons of perks from Tesla, which don't need them, because they produce only electric vehicles. Also Toyota and all other "small car" manufacturers like Mitsubishi and Suzuki don't need them. and they sell them, which makes Chrysler possible to keep the bigger engines alive.
If that would not be possible, the end of the V8's would be already in sight.
For my point- I want a V8 and when I know, that the era of the Hemi ends with the model year, guess, I'll buy my "retirement vehicle" right then and keep it till I die.
I think, a lot of people buying the RAM because of the HEMI. No other company has something similar powerful and in combination with the 8-speed transmission, fuel saving. I also believe, a lot of Ford owners switched to RAM because of it. I know, ford worked on a new V8 and stopped the project in favor of the turbo V6.
Other than that- I'm more concerned about the design. I hope FCA remembers the initial thought behind the design and that this design is, what keeps RAM alive.
It's a truck- and not a stylish luxury vehicle to show off in front of the Scala in Milano.

So what is the consensus here? Are we talking about the 2017/18 model being a 5th Gen or another update to the 4th Gen?
