Oil Availability

Have you guys noticed motor oil shortages? I normally have 2-3 oil changes on hand but recently picked up a 6.7 and per the manual it calls for 5-40 and I can't find any locally? I have 15 or so gallons of the 5/30 for my other diesels. I normally pick up the oil at farm stores. I don't have any truck stops near by. Any suggestions? Thanks, GD

Yes. You and many have seen this and its talk all around Forums and youtube. The last three trucks I did I had to get Mobil 1 5w40 at $7.99 a qt. I usually get the Valvoline 5w40 for $18.99 a gallon. Times are not good. My Napa owner said they've been waiting months for a Shell order.

I just scored 3 gallons on Shell Rotella T6 15W-40 this morning at my local Wal-Mart. Last 3 on the shelf. No other diesel oil available. Crazy.

Can't find Rotella T6 5W-40 anywhere locally, but I can get it on Amazon for $210 for 3-gal. Crazy

I just checked Walmart and the oil that I purchased in January for $23.95/gallon on Rotella T6 15W-40 is now $59.50! If you can get it. I've got 2 of the needed 3 gallons.

Last month that's what I did. A case of 2 - 2.5 gallon and a 1 gallon jug of 5w40 Syn. for $173 to my door. That's $86.50 per oil change of 3 gallons. Mopar filters I get from Walmart or Amazon.

5w-40 T6 is $23 a gallon at my local walmart. And it was on the shelf when I was in there yesterday.

Not any Rotella (other then T4) and Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme around, was lucky to find this last one at a local Wally $110

None of local stores including NAPA, AutoZone etc. have any T6 or other diesel oil in stock at the time or when I bought Amsoil ( still no oil as of yesterday when at Wally's) I was lucky and bought my oil at a lower price then what's listed this week back in Jan for my 2006 truck, it sold before I got the oil arrive to change it so I'm lucky I can use it in my 22.

I used to change my own oil, heck I even have a four post lift that can handle my dually. But my local RAM dealer has oil changes for $80. So its not worth my time to mess with this chore anymore.

Well after talking to the dealer, the new version of cummins requires different oil so the cost is nowfor a standard oil change is $155! Sticker shock!

I used to change my own oil, heck I even have a four post lift that can handle my dually. But my local RAM dealer has oil changes for $80. So its not worth my time to mess with this chore anymore.

Knowing that each dealer can use what ever brand of bulk oil it wants for non warranty work is why I will not use there oil in my engine, I have no way to know for sure what oil they are using from day to day or what oil filter will be used ( don't like the idea of a 35-40 micron oil filter on my engine) if I buy my own synthetic oil & filters I know what's going into my trucks engine, would bet its a lot better then what dealer is selling....

I see your point, but this a RAM dealer. I have delt with them for years. I watch everything they do on my truck, like a hawk. They use mopar filters, which is what I would use anyway. Plus I have an 8 year MAX care extended warranty which needs to show that FCA has performed basic service work.

Before it’s put into bottles it’s in a bulk tank. Who’s to say it’s the right oil then? You could be using Supertech oil at a higher cost.

Ever think that the engine was designed to run at a specific spec, changing the micron can change the flow rates. Does more micron mean more bypass due to increased restriction? What’s the bypass relief set at, is it starving the motor of oil?

Only the guys who designed it know, stick with OEM.

Just look at the bulletins (TSB) about issues with aftermarket filters. Some manufactures state as step one check oil filter brand, then void warranty.

I use Fleetguard Strapore oil filters on my CTD, if not available a Donaldson DBL, both are 20 micron an both are by far better then a Mopar oil filter, I have used them both for over 14 years on Cummins engines without any problems including when engine was under warranty. I would love for some dealer to try to void my warranty for using a Fleetguard filter be it oil, fuel or air...
