Oil Filter Thread

I was never like this until hemi tick, now I am ruined.

The more I read on the Pentastar, it seems ticking and failed rollers are a thing. Go figure.

I have changed the oil the past two times and each time, the oil filter has been loose. I use the Mopar filter and the first time I thought it was because I had Firestone do the oil change before that. When I did it the first time, I made sure to get the filter on there as tight as I could with my hands. Sure enough, I changed it the second time and it was loose again.

I have always turned the filters until the gasket hits the metal and then turned it 3/4 of a turn, but it seems these filters need it tightened a little bit more. Has anyone else ran into this? I will probably start using the Royal Purple 10-48 filter. Do I need to use a wrench to get it tighter? If so, does anyone have a recommended wrench that fits that particular filter?

Do you put some oil on the gasket before you put it on?

If not, do so then tighten.

I have noticed the same with the smaller filters. I tighten and when it comes time to take it off it is not tight at all. I like to put some oil on the gasket and tighten them as much as I can with my bare hand. I never had trouble getting them off. It is in such a ****** spot you can only get so much torque on it with your hand anyway. I just changed my oil a few weeks ago. I switched to the larger Fram XG2 the oil change before and it was not loose. I had to use the oil filter pliers to break the seal to get it off. It was not too tight at all and didn't feel so loose that it was about to leak. I used the XG2 again so hopefully it will be the same next change.

Yes. I always put some new oil on the gasket. I've done that ever since I started changing my oil. This is the only vehicle that I have ever had that problem on.

Maybe it has something to do with the Mopar filter. I'm going to try the Royal Purple one this time and see if it happens with that one.

I just ordered the Red Line oil kit from GotExhaust.com. That was the cheapest that I found. I went ahead and got the Red Line fuel system cleaner too. I'll try it out.

I too have the loosening oil filter syndrome. I have always cringed when I got my truck back from someone else doing an oil filter change and had to go find the oil filter wrench to take it off. I have always put it on by hand, and with very few exceptions, taken it off by hand. Since the last oil change about 2500 miles ago, I had started to notice a spot of something under my truck. When I started it, and watched it for a minute or two, I noticed a drip every so often. When I took it home and inspected it further, my oil filter was loose and the bottom of my truck coated with oil. I hand tighnted it quite a bit, then took the oil filter wrench to just 'tighten it up a bit". Needed to add a little more than a 1/4 qt. of oil to top it up. Never remember an oil filter loosening up before. The awkward spot of this filter may prevent us from getting the proper torque on the filter. And yes, I always lube the seal and put oil in the filter before installing. On a horizontal filter, I fill the filter with oil and let the filter material soak it up, then leave a little oil in the bottom (not filling completely) so that there is some/most oil in the filter to start. Letting the filter material soak up the oil and leaving a little on the bottom keeps the oil running out of the horizontal application to a minimum and gives the filter a good head start with a little oil.

some guy named Mike brought this to me, I am sure many people have already said this or posted this. At the risk of being redundant, Bosch Distance Plus High Performance Oil Filter is a synthetic filter as well.

For me its a once a year deal so it wont bother me to much..lol
Curious to see if it affects my oil temps any when pulling my camper or boat.

Next on the list (is either shorty headers or the new pfe trans aluminum trans pan) but that will be next year..lol

I think it is a blend like m1, which I just don't understand, it can't be that much more to have 100% spun microglass then blended. A step above paper, a step below synthetic filters. Unless I have my facts wrong, but they say it's blended.

You see the yellow, so it is a blend for sure at best. I'd go for the srt filter if you wanted to stay in the oem friendly choice. I'm seeing same price as RP and more expensive then fram ultra, I don't see where I'd buy this.
