Sorry about that man, what a drag. I will say this, Nick at Gotexhaust is around 12 bucks a qrt shipped free. I'd get 8 quarts.

Another option is to dress up any oil with lubegard biotech, we call it poor man's redline. If I had hemi tick, and I did, I would do whatever it took to get redline 5w30 or 0w30 if a snow state. Check out the redline thread as well, look at poll results.

I ordered the Redline 5w-40, ester based formula with extra zddp (the red bottle stuff that is recommended) for my 6.4 from Summit Racing. I've been buying stuff from them for years.

I ordered 2 gallons to make it easier (and so I have some extra just in case) and a royal purple 20-820 filter. I ordered it early afternoon and it was at my house the next day by noon. Crazy/unbelievable fast shipping and the price wasn't bad.

@GsRAM beat me to it, I get my Red Line and RP oil filters from Summit and it always arrives next day. Now that might not be the case for everyone but I’m in the Atlanta area and the distribution center/warehouse/brick and mortar store is an hour south of me.

Having said that, I’ll always point to supporting vendors first and @Nick@GotExhaust has a well earned reputation to deliver for forum members so I’d hit him up first...........

So I did my biannual oil change today to my winter oil of RL 0w30. I had been running a SRT filter since April and about 4000 miles.

The SRT filter I had assumed was synthetic media but I wasn't sure if it was spun microglass like the RP/Amsoil/XP filters. I cut it open and I see what looks like paper media but in remarkably good shape for 6 months/4000 miles. The pleats are still perfectly straight like a synthetic media filter would look like.

At @Burla s request I cut some of the media and pulled it out. It's still very pliable and not stiff or "crunchy" like every paper filter I've seen is like. For example the filters for the 3.6 is a cartridge filter and the pleats are all wavy and scrunched up. The media is very stiff and not very pliable at all.

Heres some pics of the SRT filter I cut open today and a Mopar 339 I had cut open a few years ago.5cbe5bcf12e1b7bfe16d64c5ab304248.jpg500a5f1aa702ecee2e4f493f6482e02b.jpg8e7a92276c8b6e6de1044b335dcb5998.jpga7c49619eaff87ba35fc2dcba1bc74f3.jpge54e45e3782e75dddf7a772e9a5db8e0.jpg

And we noticed some paper filters look like they have been vacuum sucked compared to spun microglass that doesn't. Looks like the vacuum moved the pleats, as if bypass is either not working or creating some vacuum. I can't imagine that is good for hemi lubrication, having that restriction or oil being pulled through a vacuum with the media as a big ol obstruction... So now that I think about it many times I have seen this diagonal movement on paper filters. I have cut open less of the spun microglass, but I have never seen this diagonal pleats that look as if it went through a vacuum or something like that. Just think about how bad that would be at lubrication our lifters at start up, to have a vacuum effect laboring to get oil through the pleats.

Notice pleats paper versus spun microglass, this is a new subject we haven't covered before.

So looking more into it, it looks like the SRT filter was specifically designed for the Viper originally and later the Hellcat and Demon. There is no aftermarket clone for this filter. It was purpose built for the SRT high performance Mopars.

This is from a Challenger forum from 2015.

From the SRT Engineers:

The SRT oil filter for all the past engines and the new22mm inlet SRT filter for the Gen 4 and beyond engines share the same characteristics. We worked with many of the filter suppliers to get the best features. Some fell out for various performance reasons but we ended up developing the current SRT filters with one of the mainstream manufacturers (it is different than their commercial offerings - or at least was when we developed it). The high flow oil pumps in our large engines (Viper is thebiggest) can overpower the internal relief valve. When this valve opens it allows some of the high pressure dirty oil to bypass the filter element in order to keep the filter from being damaged. The SRT filters do indeed have a higher differential bypass valve to make sure all the oil delivered to your powerplant is clean. The housing is slightly thicker than many of the brands out there to handle the pressure but is not the thickest. The real thick ones failed our development testing (fractured at the crimped flange). The media used was one of the latest synthetics that allowed very fine filtration, moredebris capacity, and much lower restriction than our standard Mopar filter (and just about every other filter out there).

So if I’m understanding correctly, the Mopar filter is paper and has fallen victim to the “vacuum effect”, while the synthetic media royal purple stayed firm and didn’t create a vacuum effect.

I also look at it that the synthetics not caving to the vacuum effect may not even be truly “filtering” much as the debris is freely flowing vs the paper ones that may actually be truly capturing all the flakes. But I do see the logic behind the oil may be struggling to get through the media thus starving the engine and/or creating that initial loud start up.

I do recall my fist oil change the Mopar one did catch a bunch more little metal pieces that the RP doesn’t seem to catch..Can’t recall if there was a vacuum effect on either of them though.

But if the Mopar filter WAS (probably not anymore) designed for the Viper, then it should be equally suited for our engines, thus should be among one of the best filters for our Rams?

And now I’m trying to think how both the above examples would play a role with oil pressure. Mopar filter my idle PSI was I think 40s maybe 50s? But RP is real low to mid 30s..

Super interesting after all this time and everything covered you guys have uncovered a new subject matter.

Maybe srt like Mahle some German vehicles oem??? One of the layers in the two layer fleece filter is for support, thus no need for mesh we see on every spun microglass.

The cellulose-free filter medium

Today in the series, tomorrow in the workshop

Increased service life makes also higher demands on the filter media in oil filters, particularly as the new engine generations with direct injection increase the problem of oil aging. With the use of new fully synthetic high performance oils, replacement intervals of up to 50,000 km are reached—with a trend to even longer intervals. However, due to the new general conditions, conventional filter raw materials are becoming less suitable, especially as the excessive nitration of the oils leads to embrittlement of the filter medial. The response from MAHLE: a fully synthetic two-layer fleece made of polyester, consisting of a support and a filtration layer. This makes it possible to achieve highest filtration performance with best stability—and at the same time block forming in the pleats can be avoided. Compared with cellulose fibres, the aging stability of the new oil filter medium is 7 times higher—and it offers the same or even lower pressure drop at significantly increased dirt pick-up capacity. The new cellulose free filter media are, for instance, available for Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the Aftermarket.

Just didnt feel like making another post, so back to the forum favorite...

What does Ea Mean?
Absolute efficiency (Ea) describes filters that pass the muli-pass (beta ratio) test with a contaminant-removal efficiency rate of 98.7 percent

I guess someone from Amsoil can't spell, ea is a mis spelling, it should be AE.

From amsoil on the amsoil ea/royal purple filters, thus why we see the patches so clean, and this is at 15 microns even lower then the average 20 micron ratings we usually see. Also, you see why there is better flow and better filtration, because of the size of the paper fiber compared to the synthetic, usually you get one or the other, but in the case of spun microglass there is no downside.

So that first part is what the SRT filters are made of?

I know Mahle is stamped on the Mopar air filters....

haha, srt is rebranded mahle. We do figure stuff off around here. Now, how do we compare that against spun microglass? Real interesting stuff though, I'd say pretty conclusive that is what it is. Does one side feel rougher then the other? I wonder how they binded the two medias.

Tore a bigger piece off and the inside (clean side) of the filter is definitely a rougher material than the outside. The outside is much softer, definitely doesn't feel like paper .......

Thoughts on the Fram XG2? I change my filter with my oil and the Fram is half the cost of the RP 10-48 I’ve been using. I read the last 20 or so pages and it seems like RP is having some issues?

Nothing wrong with the XG2 since it’s part of Frams Ultra Synthetic line, I’ve used several myself with good results. If you shop around you can still find other good brands like Wix XP and it’s Napa clone on sale for less money occasionally.

Superior filter media and its processing prevent decomposition and collapse of the filter under extreme conditions such as repeated cold start and high dirt load. Bypass and check valves assure constant oil supply at all times.

That is what we see when we see that diagonal pleats, that is collapsed media under vacuum.

Good news, now we have at least two real choices in filtration, and maybe three as the new puro is also a little different. Before, we were wondering if synthetic media filters might not survive the market desires, but now we see it is taking off and thriving. No need to buy twenty filters and store them at this point.
