BradKnobs fight against MLV... Part 1
I finally had time to work on the doors, hopefully the last time i pull the door panels off for a long time. I bought this...
dB-3 4 ft. x 8 ft. Acoustical Barrier-DB348X96BX at The Home Depot
I figured id give it a shot as a cheap alternative to this...
Luxury Liner - 1 sheet(9SqFt) - Second Skin Audio
Its a good bit cheaper but shi9pping from second skin was lik $65 or something crazy so thats where i saved, home depot was ship to store for free.
Basically its just a heavy vinyl that weighs .75 lbs per square foot. Less than second skin but i would try to double it up and have 1.5 lbs per square ft and would still be cheaper to do both doors and the back wall. All it does really is drape between door skin and door panel and blocks outside road noises and rattles. My plan was to fasten it to the plastic door card so the weight of it would also help prevent rattles as well as block them.
Here you can see the thickness 1/8". Also 1 roll of this stuff weighs 25 lbs and i would use almost 2/3s of a roll on each door...
Traced shape of door panel....
Cut out holes where door panel hooks were...
My main concern was how i was going to fasten it to the door. I had some industrial velcro i used. I put some on there and let this one peice sit overnight and in the sun today and when i got to my truck after work... no bueno. Velcro did not stick at all. On to plan B...
I stopped at lowes and picked up a bunch of these...
This way, the whole weight of the MLV would be put onto the inner door card and hopefully prevent a lot of resonance.
I cut both pieces and used zip ties to hold them together
Then i put it on the door, you can see 3 of the clips, 2 at bottom and one upper left. i wound up with 6 over all. I tried to fit door panel, took it off trimmed...tried to fit door panel, took it off trimmed...tried to fit door panel, took it off trimmed...tried to fit door panel, took it off trimmed... you get the idea but i was determined to get 2 sheets to fit and this is how it wound up...
Then to help get sound waves into the cab and not behind the door panel i put some camper top foam seal around the speaker that actually touches the inside the door panel ...
It was still a PITA to get the panel on but i got it.. and i didnt want to take it off again so theres not many pics of it totally completed but now my passanger door is like closing a bank vault. Between the dedener, speaker, weather seal, mdf baffle, and MLV its gotta be 25lbs heavier. I never really heard any rattling from that side from the driver seat but it is noticably quieter when driving. I dunno if its in my head but the music actuallty seams louder in the cab at a volume in which i normally listen too. when i get the driver door done and recalibrate MS-8 Ill be able to get a better idea of what it sounds like.
Took this on the way to work this morning. I know these vids are kinda pointless and do no justice but just bc i said i would. I tried to record at a volume that didnt just sound like a buncha farts on the crappy iphone mic...
