Software update bricks some Jeep 4xe hybrids over the weekend
Jeep has pulled the update; owners are advised to ignore it if it already downloaded.
arstechnica.com
Owners of some Jeep Wrangler 4xe hybrids have been left stranded after installing an over-the-air software update this weekend. The automaker pushed out a telematics update for the Uconnect infotainment system that evidently wasn't ready, resulting in cars losing power while driving and then becoming stranded.
Every vehicle with drivetrain OTA capability is vulnerable to this. Maybe it's a mistake by the legitimate OEM as above. What if it's a ransomware hacker who gained control and pushed out an update with the goal of blackmailing the OEM to return control of the system? What if there is a government mandate that changes to when you can drive? Far fetched? Ask London about Congestion charges, or Mexico City about road rationing (road rationing is when vehicles are allowed or prohibited on a given day based on the final digit of their license plate number). How far off do you think the technology is where you're an OTA update away from a vehicle that won't start if it's a Monday or it can't phone home to verify you paid your road tax, even if you don't think it's here now.
Just a related reminder: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/1406
This bill requires the Department of Transportation (DOT) to conduct research regarding the installation and use of driver monitoring systems to minimize or eliminate driver distraction, driver disengagement, automation complacency, and the foreseeable misuse of advanced driver-assist systems.
