When you guys mod stuff like ur engine cover and other stuff do you use the 3m masking tape or does any tape work and also how long do you let it dry before taking the tape off im trying to paint my hitch cover and cant seem to get it right my paint is tequila sunrise and its hard to get an even coat with that stuff seems not thick enough.

What paint are you using? What is your hitch cover made out of?

I just use painters tape when I have to tape things off.

Just about any masking tape will work, but you get what you pay for! If you want clean lines, and don't want residue left after removing the tape, buy the good stuff!!

If you are painting plastic, you MUST apply adhesion promoter first, or use plastic specific paint.

Oh yeah, and prep is key! Personally I use grease & wax remover. You rub it on, then wipe it off. After that scuff with either sandpaper, or a Scotch-Brite pad, then Grease & wax remover again, after that it's ready for paint. Unless you are painting plastic, then I would apply 1 or 2 coats of adhesion promoter (follow directions on the can).

I'm sure other people's processes vary, but I have always had good luck this way.
Good luck!

Sounds like it was a prep issue. With the lighter colors you need to have a lighter/similar base coat to get a proper color match, after that, several thin coats may be required to build up proper coverage. I was using sunburst orange as an accent for a while and that required 4 coats before it was finally a solid color. I've use the cheap white masking tape, the quality green frog tape, and standard blue or green painter's tape, all work, it's just the difference between how well each holds a solid line without bleeding and how easily they release.

If your applying it to paint or chrome plating then a low tack tape is a good idea
My dad has an aluminum hitch over like the I was going to paint and polish but haven't had the time too yet

Blue painters tapes or just masking tape will work. Light coats and prep work is the key to painting. So no rushing... LoL
