So I am moving ( finally) to the great state of Pennsylvania. One thing that is nagging me is the annual inspections. Do Local shops do the inspections? And how stringent are the inspections? My truck is pretty much straight piped ( with the cats) any decibel levels I should be looking at before the move. Worse case. Scenario for me would be to keep the ct registration till it expires then sell the truck. Or bike. Or both. Any one with any insight to this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wish you luck like NY pa is annoying with inspections I hate nj but you can get away with almost anything I think private shops do the inspections they will check things like.

Exhaust
Brakes
Tires
Rust
Ect.

Yeah, all Pa inspections are done by independent shops. Here's their website that spells it all out, but some shops are more stringent than others, depending on the tech, and some shops seem to use it as a revenue generating stream. Won't hurt to ask the new neighbors who'd they recommend.

Only had a problem once in 20 years when they rejected my cummins for non stock exhaust, It was pretty loud. Took it to another shop and it passed. I then grew up an put a banks muffler on it a few years later. Ask around where you are moving too, you will find one that wont screw you or fail you for petty stuff.

Well, welcome to Pennsylvania, when you finally get here!

I'm south of you in York County, probably about halfway to the PA/MD line.
That's too far to recommend the shop I use, probably. I know a dealer can do it but they will likely be more expensive, and less likely to let something slide.

I agree with folks who suggest chatting up your neighbors. Otherwise maybe just resort to a Google search for shops nearby that are licensed to do inspections.

That's how I found 2 close to me. The first one I tried was very small, really inexpensive, and very easy to work with. Then I discovered there is a lot of work they are just not equipped to handle.

The 2nd shop I tried and the one I am now using for my Ram and my wife's Mitsubishi Eclipse, has been just as friendly and easy to work with but will also do the tougher jobs (like driver's side exhaust manifold).

You're probably coming in to a good area. Close to the capitol, Harrisburg, a good size city, Hershey, Mechanicsburg, etc. You're also close to rural areas if you prefer to do business out in the country.

Good luck!

Yep. Each town in PA probably has at lest 3 or 4 inspection stations. Bigger towns may have up to 15-20. Like was said, some are very strict but most are fair. They will check all safety items like brakes, tires, steering and suspension, lights, etc. Your emissions inspection will probably be worse than the regular safety inspection. Where I live in PA I don't need emissions but if you do you cannot get a safety inspection sticker without the emissions sticker. Look for someone that might have a similar vehicle to yours or at least one you think would be questionable and ask them where they go. There are shops that, if they know you, will just slap a sticker on for a price if you can find them. Not saying thats where I recommend going, just saying they are out there

We lived in PA for almost 40 years. Like was already said ask your new neighbors who they use for inspections. Forget dealers or tire shops. They usually try to nitpick your vehicle to pieces. We where lucky in finding great shops but all of them came from word of mouth recommendations.

Total aside: You'll have to take a side trip out to Bube's Brewery there in Mt Joy, some weekend. Eat down in the catecombs HERE. Neat place. I used to handle distributors out that way, long ago, and guys I worked with would take me to some neat eating/drinking joints.

Good luck on your move and new adventures :waytogo:

I would find a good small shop like mine. When I had to reside in Chicagoland with a 900 whp vette ,breezing through emissions when everyone’s eyes were watering shows the benefits of a good tuner. And a tuned Audi with hi flow cats and loud exhaust was no problem. In the pipe testing used to be a problem.
