Poll best TRUCK tire?

I put General (Continental) Grabber ATX on. Best tires I've ever owned for all conditions on a truck. They were manufactured at the plant there in the USA, too. Tire Rack rates them highly, along with Falken Wildpeak AT3, but those are made in Thailand, so I'd prefer USA made. Also, reviews are noting Michelin is slipping - out of balance issues. Cooper is ok (yes, I've driven their AT3's), but not nearly as good as General.

I really like General as a whole. Great tires, great price, and the plant is about 2 hours south of me. We use to pass it all the time going to see family in Franklin. Wife turned off next to it when she went to A&M lol. I liked 275/60/15s on the back of my fox body mustangs and they were the few that still made them a few years ago. I ran those on the streets. They kept me alive many times when we would have bad rain storms and I was out in a car that weighed 3350 and had 500+ hp with 4.10 gears and a stick lol. Great all weather tries.

I found this poll very interesting. Up here, the odds on favourite for an all around/year round tire are Goodyear Duratracs. It is what virtually everyone runs on pickups if they spend a lot of time on gravel. If they work in the really heavy clay areas up north they run BFG Mud Terrains that have been siped by Kal Tire for better traction on ice. Never really thought about what tires would be the right choice for use mostly on paved roads. Tire noise isn't really one of the metrics anyone I know uses, it is all about traction and not getting flats that you have to change in the deep mud.

I put Discount Tires Pathfinders on in stock size. Seem good so far but time will tell. Much better than the Goodyear SRA. I read they were made by Hankook.

Goodyear bought Cooper? That means Mickey T, **** C, and Mastercraft are all under Goodyear as well? Interesting.

I've always used BFGs or Generals, but ended up with some Cooper MTs since they were the only USA made tires available in the size I wanted... So far so good for on road and wet tarmac performance. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do in the snow.

Well, took the truck hunting with the factory extra cost "off road" tires, Firestone Transfoce ATs that they charge an extra 350 bucks for. They should be called APs. These should NEVER go off pavement. They have ZERO steering control on muddy roads and no traction in snow. Even in low range at 5 mph it was tough to keep it on the road. The traction control was so confused in 4 high that it shut off and put up the service TCS warning. Came back okay after manually turning it off and back on but it could not keep up to the wheel spin even at slow speeds. Absolutely the worst tire I have ever run in mud or snow. Went to Fountain Tire this morning and had 4 Duratracs in 275 70 18 installed with less than 3000 miles on the truck. Well worth the 1500 bucks for the upgrade even if they have a little more tire noise on pavement. Anyone who would put these Firestones on a 4x4 needs their head read.

i have 3 go to sets i have sitting around. #1=f rated ridge grapplers for heavy towing.#2=general grabbers for daily 3 season driving.#3= my stock dura tracs for off roading/winter driving.hate them with a passion and can't wait to wear them out so i can get something more reliable.

So just out of curiosity what do you find unreliable about the Duratracs.

they puncture just by looking at them.i've been stuck with them on 2 different trucks and both times they have had catastrophic blowouts that were un pluggable.and they were the worst for balancing.my 2021 powerwagon has one wheel that has a strip of weights a foot long.never had these issues with any other brand of tire in over 30 different sets over the years.

Looking at getting new tires and was looking at the Cooper Discover AT3 XLT. I see them mentioned as tires made for towing and a lot of guys with 2500's put them on there. Are they pretty heavy? Should they be avoided with a 1500 that isn't going to tow that much?

Was also looking at the AT3 4s since they are more affordable but doesn't look like they make a bigger size than 275/60/20 unless I want to switch to a smaller rim. Could stay stock but putting on a leveling kit soon and was thinking of going a little bigger.

Well, after hunting the truck with the Duratracs for two weeks in really bad conditons, I can tell you they are a huge improvement over the Firestone ATs I just had taken off after 3000 miles. I have used Duratracs on my off road rigs for decades, and tried many other tires. some work better off road, some work better on road, but I have not found one that I like better for dual duty and year round use where I don't have to change tires summer and winter.

I have never seen the blowout issues, flats etc, though I have seen the odd one that needed to be replaced because it took too much weight to balance. I have never had a dealer install a tire that took too much weight, they replaced it right away during the initial install. All large E type truck tires will occasionally have a tire that is out of normal weight distribution, if you have tire dealers that put defective tires on your truck you need a new dealer.

have had two sets both were bald before 15,000 miles freeway driving no loads.

Bump for a good review. I can say maybe the lightest tires are the worst? The lighest they wrote on was good year, makes sense to me. Maybe that isnt fair, but man are oem tires just junk not worth ever even producing.

That really is an excellent review. Thanks for posting it. Tells you how much of posted opinions are just wrong or the result of someone only owning one or two sets of tires. Also tells you just how important the actual use parameters are to picking the right tire.

Now they did review load e which is what I have, but I generally dont recommend those. If I had it to do over, something less for sure. I don't tow heavy enough to justify it, and the ride id harsher then I would like due to load e. Just like they say, you will feel the road.

My use now in life is my Ram will see NO bad weather (have a rusty 00 buick for that, it is a one legged 2WD ( someday will add a tru-trac - put this in my former truck as it was used primarily in winter when I could not rive the Victory and that Dakota was also 2WD). So now I look for quiet,mileage, and water traction. My chioce usually - for any vehicle- is a popular brand so if on the road it can be replaced and/repaired if needed.

totally good point, chose your tires well or you can have some regret. Now, with oem I was sliding when braking or taking off in the rain like after 5k miles new, so compared to that I would say I did good. But, they could be better. I have always ran BFG, this was my first load e, I do prefer the lesser load ratings, but I really like the bfg. so yes I'm biased I guess.

What a bunch of flacks, trying to gaslight what is obvious to anyone experience with new vehicle ownership that they put on the cheapest junk they can get. Goodyear Wrangler SRA is rated one of the worst tires of all on Tire Rack, and for Load Range E (3/4 and 1 ton trucks), Firestone Transforce (relabeled in a lame attempt to convince us it is better than the legacy Steeltex).

Ram uses these. I've had new Rams with both of these on - they were so bad I got rid of them as soon as I good afford a new set of quality tires.

Pretty sure you can get a load range D (8 ply) in same sizes as load range E (10 ply). I stay with the E's for my occasional heavy loads. The PCM won't let you run the rears below 70 psi to protect Stellantis from dumb **** misapplication lawsuits with tires too low pressure at full load. I don't have a tuner to let me bypass, so I run full pressure. But the Gen IV HD's have the 5 link coil rear suspension, so ride is much better than the leaf spring lumber wagons.
