So I did an overhaul on all of the truck. All fluids were changed. Plugs wires etc. Ive noticed the MPGs have slowly been going down. Its gone from 16 mpg to 13. Not drastic, but enough to notice. Its also been sluggish lately. So the other day it was raining and I went to stop and the truck randomly died. It restarted fine, but it I got to thinking well I haven't replaced the fuel filter. I did some research and there is no fuel filter. How dumb. So has anyone had a pump go out on them? 157k miles 2012 5.7 1500. Any other suggestions as to what maybe causing it? Ive ran seafoam through the tank. Fuel injectors? Its never given me one issue before in the past.

Fuel pumps usually just stop working and aren't intermittent problems. It does happen from time to time though. Check to see if there are any codes stored

You can always check fuel pressure can be done with a scanner or hook a guage into the line.

I don’t see a clear scenario where fuel pump causes decreased fuel economy.

I have experienced an intermittently failing pump in a GM truck that was very hard to figure out. It would occasionally stumble but go right back to running perfectly almost immediately. No codes, fuel pressure tested good; checked wiring and control module. No cause could be identified. I drove it for days with a fuel pressure gauge taped to the windshield. Never saw a blip. It would run WOT and never falter. Yet it continued to occasionally stumble just off idle.

Finally I got tired of it and installed a new fuel pump. Cured.

O2 sensors are not a lifetime part and do not always show codes. These can have an impact on fuel mileage.

If the fuel pump is intermittent the number one culprit is the TIPM solder joint for that relay, it isnt the relay but in the TIPM so replacing the relay is no good. But, my guess is something else. Did you use ngk plugs?

I don't know what you're using for a scan tool but check the live data to see if anything can be seen acting unusual when it shuts off on you. Intermittent problems can be a pain to diagnose especially over the internet

This is true. Ive got a buddy that runs a automotive repair shop. Ill see if he can scan it for me.

Just a possibility of the fuel pump relay beginning to malfunction
It is really not the relay, it is the wiring in the TIPM, that leads to the relay.

Some people just bypass that relay

several solutions come up online

I’ve had this show up a lot with GM products - made me crazy because of how intermittent it was - finally rotated relays with another one in the fuse box to test and the problem went away. A lot better place to start vs. dropping the tank and replacing the pump.

Lower gas mileage, sluggish, loosing fluid says to me you may want to first check your intake gasket. At idle, take pressurised carb cleaner and spray it around the edges of the intake gasket. See if the idle changes. If it is sucking air it will change. Next check for head gasket leaks.
