For lack of better spot, I'm posting here.

2014 1500 crew cab with 84k miles.

I've started noticing a noise when turning the wheel a few degrees. Is mostly prominent on long bends where you hold the wheel at a constant angle of less than 90 degrees for several seconds. I would describe it almost like the sound of brakes dragging when spinning hubs by hand. Sort of a light grind or rub. With the electric power steering I'm not even sure what to look at.

Truck will be going in for recalls and state inspection soon so I plan to have them check, but wanted to look myself first.

Well, could be your rack and pin, inner tie rods also. I just had this sort of issue on my 2011 1500. I changed out the rack and pin a year ago and come to find out that when they changed the rack and pin, they put the old inner tie rods back on as I have a 6” lift and they put the outer tie rods back on (had too as they Fabtech outer). For the life of me I don’t know why they put the old inners back on. Anyways, my steering wheel was making a bump/knock sound when I would turn the wheel any direction. I didn’t get a pump whining noise, just a very faint bump/clunk sound When the wheel was turning. Very noticeable if you wiggled the wheel back and forth. If it’s the rack and pin, you would be hearing some whining noises that are pretty loud and your steering wheel would be harder to turn I believe. I may be wrong but that’s a start.

Interesting, had not thought of the rack. Wheel still turns smooth with no noticeable clunk or binding. I almost wonder if its just the ridge grapplers catching air. I have had the tires for 2 years so I would think I would have noticed it sooner if it was them.

Guarantee it’s not the pump, being that a 2014 1500 doesn’t have one. It has electric power steering.

Yeah I went looking for it when I first noticed the sound because I had completely forgot about the electric power steering.

Did you ever find the cause of the noise. I’m having the same issue on my 2014 1500 with 175k.
