So I know to re-gear our trucks requires a custom bracket and the diff out of an older truck if you have a 2012 4x4 like me.

My question is, what if you bought a 4" or 6" lift for an 09 truck and also source a front diff for an 09. To my knowledge the only difference would be the mounting brackets for the diff.

Do y'all think this would work or am I sounding like an idiot?

i dont think the year truck you buy the lift for is going to make a difference when it comes to swapping gears. as far as the gear swap goes, theres plenty of info out there on this with everything you need and problems you might run into.

http://www.ramforum.com/f40/2012_4_56_gears_6_lift_lessons_learned-78777/

It does because to swap gears in a 2012 truck you need a front diff from a 2009-2011 truck as you can't swap gears in a 2012+ front diff.

OP, as far as I know, yes as far as the brackets for the front diff goes you will need the correct ones for whatever front diff you source for the gear swap. However I would talk to a company like BDS first to confirm that the difference is on the differential itself and not the truck.

awesome i guess I need to do a little more research. I plan on going with a zone 4 inch lift so it looks like I will be talking to the BDS/Zone guys about this idea

Depends on what ratio your looking to swap to also. I have a 2015 with 3.21 and i need to regear due to the 35s im running now and the 37s that are on my short list. Ive opted to upgrade to 3.92 since it seems to be the earsier of the swap. I purchase the oem 3.92 from moes and the entire mopar front diff from elsewhere. I will be performing the swap in 2 weeks and since the diffs are the same with different internals it should be an easy swap and should not effect my 6 inch pro comp lift. Ive read forums saying i will need more gear for 37s but ive also read saying i would need more than 3.21 for 35s which so far i think is bogus. The 3.21 turns the grapplers fine. Its not sluggish thanks to the 8 speed but my milage suffers.i know the 3.92s will help with that and towing.

your either going to need both diff brackets to make your own or have custom brackets made so i dont see any difference in buying one for a 2009 truck or 2012+ truck. unless im missing something else.

That is also another good option if 3.92's is what you're looking for. :waytogo:

That completely depends on what's different between the brackets. If only the differential side is different and the frame side is the same between all 4th gens then he would just need the differential brackets for a 2009 front diff. If just the frame side is different and the differentials are the same between all 4th gens then he would use the differential brackets for his year truck. If both sides are different, then yes, we're getting into some custom work but I don't expect that is the case.

thats exactly why i posted the link in my original post. it appears both sides are different. it should not matter what year you buy the lift for, i dont see it making it any easier or cheaper one way or another.

No one seems to know anything about regearing up by me on Long Island. I got the two links from Moes on what I need but as far as the install, I have no idea what to do. I did find one place and this is what they said...
"Yes. The problem is in the conversion, I believe the tuning is going to have to be reconfigured in the PCM, which would require a tunable pcm and a trinity for speedo calibration. Which adds approx 1400 to the whole job on top of conversion. Rear ring & pinion labor is 8 hours. Labor rate is 125/hr. .. Brings total almost 5k out the door.."

This seem right?

no its not. there is no tuning for a gear swap in a ram. only speedo re-calibration for different size tires.

i am curious though...what shop was this? i agree, most shops around here dont know their ass from their elbow when it comes to these trucks.

thanks guys this is all good stuff. I thought about just swapping in a diff with 3.92's but I do a fair amount of towing so I think 4.56 would be the best option for a lift and 35's.

from what I can gather it is only one of the three mounting points on the differential that is different so if my idea doesn't work I guess I will have to make a bracket for it and do it the hard way
