Good Morning All,

After being able to re-charge my OEM battery twice this winter on my 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn, it died again this morning. I was able to jump it again with my battery pack, but I'm finally going to replace it. I'm going with the Walmart H7 Platinum AGM, 800CCA. It's all they have in store, and for the $180+tax price and 4-year warranty, it's the best deal. I'm planning on upgrading to the H8 size once my warranty is finished. I've watched the videos on how to change the battery, but I do have a couple of questions though. I have read that you can plug the battery pack into the lighter plug to keep the computer up while changing the battery. This would prevent the computer from needing to be reset or losing its configuration.

1. Do I need to use the battery pack, plugged into the lighter plug to maintain the computer? Is there any risk of losing the configuration if I don't?
2. There are 2 plugs in the truck, - one that turns on with the engine and has a key icon on it, and one that is always on with a battery icon on it. Which one would I plug the battery pack into?

Thanks,

Joe

1. You don't need to use it. You won't lose your configuration but you will lose some user settings that you will have to go back and adjust.

2. I thought that the battery pack plugged into the OBD port to keep the memory alive...something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CHJ4XR2X/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_7?smid=A3205UHJV0C657&psc=1

I did not use a "memory saver" when I changed my battery as I wanted to start from scratch. With the intermittent battery/voltage issues I had I did not want anything left in the memory.

It took a couple of days and several start/drive cycles before all the functions came back.

Wild one, are you sure? The last thing I want to do is put the bigger battery in and then find out I screwed myself over down the line.

Thanks.
The only thing it'll hurt is your battery warrenty, which doesn't apply once you change the battery. The ecodiesals come with the bigger H8 right from word go,they should of also installed the bigger H8 in the hemi and 3.6 trucks, but you know Ma Mopar, gotta save a quarter ,so there's more profit in the truck for Ma Mopar, lol

Thanks @Wild one

I was just looking at a post I received about removing the peg in the battery tray. When I looked up the part in the post for the replacement battery blanket (5033397AE) for the bigger battery on a Mopar parts site, it looks like it is the same part as the default (H7) blanket that I currently have. Will the blanket from the 2021's fit on the H8 batteries?

Thanks,

Joe

Do you have to register the new battery, so the computer knows a new battery has been installed?

My battery died suddenly after 2 1/2 years or so. I replaced the LA H7 with an AGM H8 and never had any warranty issues.

My H7 blanket did not fit my H8...not even close. I went "blanket-less" with my H8 with no issues.

5 years ago I swapped out the OEM to an H7, and just recently upgraded to the H8. Didn't have an issue with anything, and the only thing I had to reset was the clock.

I have always used a "memory saver" when I change out batteries. Maybe it is just a peace of mind thing, or just a little "OCD", but it works for me. Just a simple inexpensive one that plugs into the OBD II port. Something like this I use with a Jump Pack. Some say say it is not necessary, but I still do it anyway.

As CAN/BUS FD and ultra enhanced OBD2 goes forward, and ADAS, adaptive cruise, et.al. come about, saving memory can and does prevent HUGE headaches when one reconnects the battery and the windshield wipers go nuts like drunken sailors, the dash lights up better than the Christmas tree. On many of the cars, it means a tow to the dealer and an expensive re-calibration. Some cars have GPS driven self learn, but still require a high end scanner capable of putting the system into service mode.
Just because someone got damned lucky when they changed out their battery doesn't mean you will, too.

My 2018 Tradesman is on its second battery, and it was installed by AAA. I don't remember them doing anything like putting a memory saver on, and I don't even think my radio presets went blank. The next battery I'll install myself because AAA raised prices, so I'm wondering if I should get one of these memory saver gadgets, or just hope for the best? I have a jump pack so it would be easy to plug one into the OBD port.

Wildone, will the stock alternator fully charge the H8 battery? Thanks
With no issues. My truck had no issues charging this monster Group 31 AGM, it also sat a good 15+ feet from the stock location, and ran through 2 master disconnect switches.1 switch on the battery box itself and 1 switch in the back bumper to be NHRA legal.
