Because NHTSA approved the weld and go away, at least initially.

And replacing parts costs more money than weld and go away.

This must be true but it's gotta be close. I mean time to test the faulty part, weld the part, paint the part. If that's not close in shop time and materials to what the actual part costs them I'd be really surprised.

I think the difference is the "skill level" assigned to the task.

It might be 2 hours for both the test/weld/paint and replacing the part completely, but if the skill level required is higher for replacing the part, it (technically) costs more money.

(Im using "skill level" because its Mopar's own term assigned to different repairs)

It's what Mopar calls it, they assign skill levels to anything done on the truck. I assume higher skill levels bill out at higher $.

Is anyone has the official tsb pdf, it will say what skill level to bill for, for the welding and the replacing of the part.

I took my truck in for tailgate recall, and I guess they were out of the little plastic thing they use to do the repair, so the same guy that welds the nuts, welded my tailgate shut for me, now I can stop worrying about it falling down inadvertently, when driving down the road!!

$1940 WOW!!!. That is absolute robbery!! The drag link is a $280 part and 1 hour labor worst case. That is crazy. Shame on that dealer who ever they are.

I would get on the phone with them. Waiting for an email or message response is hit or miss at best.

Something is not right in this scenario. I do however, think you will get no reimbursement because the fix was applied per the recall dealer service instruction. I recall in that instruction the weld must have a breakaway torque of 77 ft. lbs. That could suggest any future alignments could be done by breaking the welds, complete the alignment, and re-weld the jamb nuts to the sleeve or replace these items. It has never been clear if the weld fix was a temporary solution and Ram would eventually replace the link with the updated version.

Did dealer explain why it is necessary to replace the link after the safety recall had been performed and why you would have to pay for a new link in order to get the alignment done? Did you give the okay to proceed?

After all that, did they install the updated version link or replace it with same link?

COAs, from least expensive to most: 1. Work through the FCA reimbursement process, I don't think you'll have much success there ( I would be shocked if you did); 2. File a complaint (or follow the process) with your state's Attorney General's office that handles consumer affairs complaints; or 3. Take FCA to court.

Holy Batdung Robin! Someone is getting hosed on this deal. FCA reimbursed me the new part and tax, just under $110. I installed it myself. FCA required I go to my nearest dealer, which I did, to confirm the install. They ok’d it and I’ve had no issues for months now. Steering/alignment is adjustable, of course if needed, and tire wear is excellent. Good luck in your endeavors to get $$$$!

We are able to replace the drag link if concerns arise.

Since I haven't allowed them to weld mine yet, I think you just convinced me to do what you did. If I do, and get denied, trust me when I tell you it will come back on them 100 fold!. I have an 8' bed. The perfect size for an "A-Frame" sign explaining what they did. I can't work b/c of injury so I have all day to ride around Knoxville and explain how FCA denied a proper repair on a potentially deadly problem.

Na brother, contact Katilin at ram cares here and via PM and talk to her about it. She is great. She's the one who finally got this squared away for me. She can help facilitate getting yours replaced with the revised FCA drag link. It takes some time, patience and persistence, but she helped get mine replaced and fixed the right way as I also refused to allow the weld fix. All good now! I'm a happy customer again
