2013 ram 1500 5.7

Check engine lights came on and truck started sputtering. It felt like a coil pack to me and so i went tk autozone for a scan and it was.

Cyclinder 8 coil pack is what came up in there system to replace. So i did.
Problem not solved. I looked up cyclinder 8 location on a 09 i think it was and it shows location 8 being passenger rear coil.

Anyone have any insight on this for me?
Thanks in advance

I hate to say it, but what you are describing sounds like a failed lifter and a cam lobe that has been destroyed. If it is not caught quick enough, it will throw a misfire code like you experienced. Try changing the coil pack, check the plugs, and last resort is to switch an injector from a different cylinder to #8. If it continues to throw P0308 after trying these things, then its time to tear it down and inspect the cam and lifters.

Whoever read you're code was out to sell you parts. The only thing the code reader will tell you is misfire on cylinder 8 or random misfire cylinder 8. It will not tell you it's the coil pack. If you Google it it will give you a list of things to test or check, which coil pack would be one of them, but it will NOT tell you it's the coil pack.

I had a worse issue when the cylinder one valve spring cracked. My truck was hootin' and hollerin'. Sucked, though it sounds like your issue is not near as bad as mine. The truck would hardly start when that happened.

Thanks guys. It was the plugs it cylinder 8. I first tried coil pack and nothing. Then ran truck and disconnected fuel injector and i heard a difference so that was not it either. I then looked at plugs which i shouldve done while coil pack was out but that was the issue.

Im going to replace all the plugs. Any suggestions on what to get?

Also did the plugs go early due to another problem? 12b05f7e83066264bd9473f6d9fc6664.jpg

Those plugs are supposed to be changed at 30,000 miles. You were well past due.

Thats funny. The dealer told me when i bought them they were 100k mile plugs. Well thanks for letting me know and that explains alot.

Any suggestions on new ones or just get the same plugs?

2014+ have 100,000 mile Irridiums, but the 09-13's have a nickel plated 30,000 mile plug. OEM NGK's are the way to go.

Problem came back!!
Seems to be a intermittent problem. What could it be?

New plugs and coil pack installed only in cylinder #8

Autozone said the code was cylinder #8 and i already did what they recommended which is what i thought it was myself. Now im worried i have something internally going on or a bad head gasket :(

Any ideas??

Swap the coil with another cylinder. Hopefully it will follow. Then you will know if you got a defective coil right out of the box. It does happen on occasion. I would also check the gap on the 2 new plugs. If all checks out, you may be correct and have a bigger issue.

I bought plugs from ram dealer and asked about what the gap was.... of course they had no idea and just said they come pre gapped
