Those Founteks are some of the best midranges around for the money. You should try a Scan 10f.

From ZaphAudio.com Testing Founteks
Comments: This is without a doubt the highest performing 3" I've come across, at least on a few fronts. The motor is an underhung neodymium design and the cone is thin (and fragile) formed aluminum. The only negative is a slightly ragged top end that may take some filter work if used full range, but I'd generally recommend a cheap and small neo tweeter placed close and crossed over high. There's a lot on the positive side, like high sensitivity, a clean low end and smooth midrange response. The frame is cast with ventilation under the spider, but users will have to pay close attention to airflow behind the cone - It's even more important to chamfer the inside baffle opening and in this case likely use a thinner baffle material as well. Tested June 2009.

I actually saw that review and I believe it was for the FE88 which looks like a great driver and it actually is a reason why I spent 20 bucks and picked up these FE83's. I really just wanted to play with them and use them in my garage when I'm working on things out there. The scan is also on a short list to try and I will pick them up one day. The reason I went with the HAT's is they are a fantastic driver and has been proven to work very very well on and off axis in many applications. I got a great deal on them so it made my choice even easier to pick them up over anything else at this moment. There are a few more out there that I will be trying when I build my own tower speakers so be prepared to see more small mids in my posession lol.

After trying the Fountek 88's and 89's, I ended up giving the 10f's try based on their reviews and being highly sought after in 3-way setups. I'm glad I tried them a couple years ago they are my one an only midrange. The even outperform their bigger brother the 12m. I couldn't imagine using any other midrange than the 10f's. If you get chance to try them out you will see what I mean. Excellent IB performance with a 6 band flat eq response.

Another driver to consider if you like to play around is the Scan Rev 18w4531. You won't need to look for another mid-bass woofer again. In all honesty, I don't think I've heard anything better. The Illuminators...just not a smooth as the Revs.

That's what I do....I stay away form the expensive gear nowadays. Never seen any price to performance benefits. I just buy random cheap stuff and play around. Sell it off and on to the next.

I hear ya and I am starting to get into the stuff that is "cheap" alternatives that I can still sell when I need to, like my Hertz tweets love them but once I have my xbl set in I'll be selling the Hertz.

The Hertz Mille drivers get good reviews...rarely see anything on the tweeters though. You owe to yourself to try the Illuminator tweeters if you can get past the ugly face plate. They sound amazing and can play very low compared to mainstream tweeters.

Tell me about it. I found a guy with them in a comp set though. Tried to get him to sale separate. May give him a few day and offer to buy the entire set a reduced price. Sell off the other stuff.
