i was doing some work and my rear brakes and while trying to adjust the rear parking brake i found that the star wheels have no threads on the insert side? is this a defect? See this picture attached, I am out of warranty but I feel like i should go to the dealer and show them this...

That's normal. The star moves up and down the part its currently on. The star and the bolt are 2 separate parts.

I cant see how that can work I have been doing brakes for 30 years and never seen this. right now as you turn the star nothing expands so the brakes don't adjust, The star bolt has thread but the part it threads into is smooth?

The star moves down the threads of the bolt its on in your pic. As the star moves down, it pushes the sleeve out to expand or retract if you turn it towards the bolt head.

sorry, see it now, mine was seized solid

You can buy a parking brake hardware kit that comes with new springs and adjusters.

Be sure you check the lever between the cable and the shoes. They like to rust and stick.
