Hello Everyone,

I have been doing a bunch of reading on a few issues lately (i actually forgot i was a member on this forum). After reading a bunch of threads about these "semi common" issues, im still a little unsure if i have a problem. I figured it may be easier to explain exactly what im experiencing and see what people think (I really do not want to deal with dealer if its not a real issue). Truck is a 2016 5.7 4x4 8 speed 3.92 rear with 9800 miles.

Issue 1: Rear end clunk. This is not gas in the gas tank. It does not happen every time. I can make it do it if i want. Its basically anytime i come to a stop with a little force. If i slow easy and slow it doesnt do it. From what i read, its the transmission shifting into first or the torque converter locking/unlocking. Feels just like a bump from behind.

Issue 2: First time experiencing it was last night. I go up and over a mountain every day to work. Last night i was going home coming down the mountain. I had 2 vehicles in front of me, the front one was going fairly slow (they were going around 40 in a 50). So i was basically off the gas decelling. As you all know, this motor tends to shift up early on hills. The truck shifted up (probably to 3rd) and all of a suddent i could hear the motor ticking. I could hear it over the radio, so i turned it down and listened. IT was a fast tick tick tick. I never experienced this before and never did the 2 years i had my last truck (2014 5.7 4x4). I heard this tick all the way home. This morning i did not hear it at all.

Like i said, id rather not deal with the dealer unless its a real issue. But if you suggest ill take it in and see what they think. TIA

I will only reply to the Issue #1. I am on my 3rd Gen 4 Ram truck, all with Hemi motors. I had a 2011 Quad Cab 4x4 with 5 speed and 3.55 rear gears, a 2014 Crew cab 4x4 with 8 speed and 3.21 rear gears. Both of these trucks I bought new and they did not do what your experiencing. Now my present truck a used 2011 Crew cab 4x4 with 5 speed and 3.92 rear gears does what you are feeling. I feel it is the torq converter as I can put it in tow/haul and it does not do it. I think it has something to do with the steep 3.92 gears.

thanks for the reply XCELLR8. I agree. It probably is connected to the steep gears. The fact that i can pretty much make it do it when i want tells me its connected to the quick stop. Thanks for the reply.

As far as my motor tick, it has gotten worse. this morning i could hear it over the radio. Previously when i accelerated it would basically go away. This morning when i took off from a stop sign (after about 30 minutes of driving) it was ticking badly through acceleration. Truck didnt accelerate/run the same as usual. Felt off. Then after about 2 miles of driving i pulled into work, put it in park and the truck had a little shake to it. I called the dealer and am bringing it in tomorrow. Ill report back with findings. I had a 2014 5.7 before this that never had these symptoms. I have a feeling the dealer is going to tell me they found nothing and its normal. I have no confidence in this dealer. The service dept has a lot to be desired.

Hi 16RamHemi,

Were you able to do a test drive/ride along with someone at the dealership? This has been really helpful in my experience to make sure you as the customer can be sure the dealership is aware of the exact concern you're experiencing. Let me know if I can help or follow up with your dealership.

Thanks for the reply. I have yet to go to the dealership. I have an appointment tomorrow morning. I told them it probably shouldnt be driven any more than it needs to, but they wanted me to pay for a rental (my truck is brand new with 9800 miles, im not paying for a rental). So i will be driving it home tonight and bring it in tomorrow. I have a couple aweful phone recordings where i can hear the tick. Its very obvious when it does it. Esp the way it was doing it this morning. The shaking this morning was a first. When i called the dealer, the service person i spoke with asked if it was at start up. So they know there are some issues. It started at start up and now occurs at various times (on decel, acceleration, down shifting etc). So i will give the dealer a shot and see what they say. I will be sure to update this thread so i can help others going through this (if i have anything positive to add). Again, thanks for the reply.

Cover the basics first..
Hitch ball in the receiver?
and,
Stone in the tire?

I appreciate your help, and i agree sometimes things can be over looked where simple solutions can be it, but i know the difference between the motor ticking and a rock in my tire as well as a hitch.

Update: Truck was looked at yesterday. All the ticking was due to being 2 quarts low on oil. Dealer said they had gotten a bad batch of oil filters. Filter was tight, but oil was leaking by. So far, the drive home last night as well as the drive in this morning was fine. No more ticking. Time will tell. Defintely not what i was expecting. All covered under warranty.
