So i noticed my rear end was leaking fluid, so i brought it in to my mechanic and they took apart the diff im assuming and said they found pieces of metal in it. They also said that the gears are shot and I will need a whole new rear axle. Has this happened to anyone? or any advice on what i should do next?

honestly couldnt tell ya got it used like two or three months ago. But where the driveshaft meets the axle it looks like a gasket but an enlarged metal version, that was replaced right before i purchased the truck

Sorry to hear it, Bummer. It would have needed fresh fluid and gasket/RTV then, unless the pinion nut was overtightened upon reassembly.
Could be LSD Moustache pieces? Also Mopar seals are not double lipped and tend to leak anyways. Napa sells double lipped seals. Some may dissagree but a trick that is missed too is to put a bead Of RTV on the pinion splines before tightening the nut.
Good Luck.

thank you i appreciate it, they replaced the pinion seal and rear diff gasket to see if that would help. They also found the metal in large chunks when they took apart the rear diff, they also found that the last garage that replaced the pinion seal gauged a deep cut where the seal lies. So hopefully these replacements can possibly do the trick we'll see
