So what if tiny particles never fully dissolve into the mixture? They aren’t going to be large enough to clog any passages. I’ll cut open my filter after my oil interval and we’ll see how much graphite is in the 10um or more royal purple synthetic paper net.

  • Molybdenum disulfide will perform as a lubricant in vacuo(vacuum) where graphite fails.

So if someone was concerned the "heavy" weight of RL 5-30 was causing a piston slap/knocking noise in cold weather, what would you switch to?

A "lighter" 5W-30 (like PUP), a 5W-20 (PUP or QSUD), or go all the way down to a 0W-20 (like M1 EP or Toyota)?

I’m thinking of trying PUP or PP 5w30. Not that redline isn’t good just trying something else to see if a more readily available locally oil performs just as good for me.

I'f you used redline 5w30 for a specific reason, I would consider that as an option in 0w20. The same reason still exists, it's just that we added piston slap to the situation. You still get all the goodies, it's just that it will be better in the cold.

awesome! Put it in crank case when running. I did that once with an oil treatment and the engine instantly smoothed out, lol. I don't want to say the name of this additive because since then I found out there are some real risks involved, so I don't want people to try it. As it turns out, the science behind this product is probably the best at killing ticks, but the juice aint worth the squeeze on this one. Chlorinated Paraffins are really good at what they do, of course bad downside.

RL was there just to keep everything quiet. I didnt like what it sounded like on PYB 5-20, PUP 5-20, or even PUP 5-30. Was it Hemi tick or piston slap back then? Probably not, it wasnt loud at all but it wasnt quiet like our Lexus :)

The RL seems to have made a good difference, but if it turns into issues when its cold out, thats another story.

I dont know what the answer is for guys with the 2500's + that get 40 weight spec'd, as we know Kyle is/was getting piston slap. It isn't like they can move to 20 weight. Quagmire for them, at least with the 1500's we have a choice. Pour 32 ounce size biotech maybe? use 0w40 m1 the original super class oil, low cSt. But he can't do that because he has hemi tick as well, and we know redline killed that tick. quagmire..

If I do make a change, it will be with something readily available, so most likely PUP, probably in 5-20. Chrysler says its the perfect match lol

QSUD 5-30 (2015 formula)

Im just curious don't the new rams also have a vicosity sensor in them? i know my 07 threw a engine light when I ran 5/30 and it called for /5/20 (if my memory serves me well). I would think running all these different oils other then what the engine calls for would do the same on the more advanced technology.

About 1/2 the forum uses 5w30 with no problem, well except piston slap :)

There is a poll, close to 50% of the guys are running 30 or even 40 weight.

My engine was a little noisy first several minutes after a start and I changed to Havoline Pro ds synthetic and its a very quiet engine now...at least for last 10k miles or so....must be those little deposit shields running round in there.lol

I ordered 2 bottles of bio tech. Will keep everyone posted going forward. If it doesn't take care of the cold start piston slap I'll switch to 0w20 or 30.

32 degrees this morning, engine sounded fine starting up.

Might swap out for PUP or QSUD 5-20 this weekend, just to be sure. Will save the RL for the spring/summer.
