We know Redline oil is good at killing the "Hemi" tick, mostly 5w30, but how good is it at maintaining the longevity of the engine. Has any one switched over to Redline 5w30, 5w20, 0w30, 5w40, 0w40 below 20k miles and made it past 150K, 175K or 200K+ miles with no engine related problems? It does a good job at stoping the "Hemi tick" but does those pesky lifter/cam problems still happen?

I doubt any oil alone will prevent lifter/cam failures. But until/unless we know for sure what causes it there is no way to eliminate the risk of those parts failing. Lots of speculation out there from some knowledgeable people. But no real data to back it up. To me it stands to reason that if you can do something to stop the "Hemi tick" why wouldn't you? I'm confident that RL 5w 30 is as good as any oil out there.

I switched to Redline 5W-30 at 100k In my 11 5.7, 5 speed with 3.55 gears. 4x4.

I sold it at 150k. Never touched the cam or lifters. The guy who purchased is still driving it. It has 220k on it now. Still on original cam and lifters. I'm certain he's changed the oil. I don't know what he is using.

11s had a high number of cam failures, why does this one not fail? Was it redline or luck of the draw. Who knows.

I do know, I drive long distances frequently. I do know he drives 75 miles to work each way. So 150 miles a day.

Perhaps it because the engine is not idling and is always at speed ?

Who knows I doubt you will ever prove redline is a factor with out a controlled experiment in a lab

I could continue to describe my experience over the 5 other hemi 5.7s that are in my fleet but. I would be boring.

I’ll bite. Sure it’s good but amsoil is easy to get great quality and comes in 4 gallon cases with free shipping. I have used it and no complaints.I would switch if it fit all my habits. No tick ,great oil pressure so far,36k very beat on.460 whp.

To us northerners the oil pressure comes up slower at colder temperatures so to avoid excessive wear I recommend the OE block heater 3 hrs on and it really helps,I always have a 100’ cord with me.800 watts

I would say my combined usage of RL in my 2013 is about 50-60k, truck is at 100k now. I have since switched to Amsoil SS 0w40 because its a bit cheaper and easier to get but it just doesn't have that butter smooth idle like RL 5w30 gives it.

I don't see anything wrong with running RL from day one if you can. Wish I had done that.

I've never touched redline or lubegaard but I consistently have been using pup5w30. She's seen 12 oil changes in het life and it's all documented. It's been PUP the last 10 changee and pennzoil platinum once followed by qsud. We'll see how it goes.

I thought the block heater was only about 400/450 watts. I prefer oil pan heaters over block heaters, cheaper to leave plugged in then a block heater, and they keep the oil warm. 65 years of living in Western Canada where it can get down to -50C taught me to use oil pan heaters, lol

Well, I've been using Red Line 5w/30 in my 5.7 HEMI engine on the last four oil changes(@3000 mile oci's), started the fifth about a week ago.

I was using Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum, 5w/20 and 30 when my truck was new, @every 3000 mile oci's.

My HEMI never had/currently doesn't have the "tick" and moving to Red Line 5w/30 was just an preventive approach to an possibilty of keeping the lifter/cam "monster" from rearing it's ugly head.

I've read, here in the RAMforum, about the benefits of oils with higher molybdenum/zddp additives that could help my engine and made the switch to Red Line 5w/30.

My HEMI engine(currently at ~54,000 miles)has the occasional "dry start up" clatter, but other than that, it's still quiet for the most part and hopefully will continue ...

I've sent in my recent oil sample to Blackstone Labs(10/28/24)and will post the results over on the Blackstone Labs thread.

Hammer down and happy motoring!

6.4

Im at about 94,000 miles. Most of my miles are on redline and i had great UOA’s with it. 5w30, 10w30, 0w40. All 3 were great. I think 5w30 was what my 6.4 like best actually. Its a thick 30w for sure. And the 6.4 was tested on 30w. The 0w40 PUP spec was a marketing play.

Id still be running Redline if it the prices were not so dang high now. I switched back to Amsoil 0w40 probably 20,000 miles ago.

I have used Redline 5w30 and RP 20/820 in it since I bought the truck at 150K miles back in 2018. Truck has 163K miles on it now, and it runs incredibly strong and quiet for the year/miles on it. The previous owner said that he used Redline 5w20/5w30 in it, not sure for how long. Also, I have no previous maintenance records to prove it.

I wasn’t sure so I tested it with my TS600. it’s inside but it draws 4.8 amps at 120 volts so 576 watts Which is great when you’re in a virbo or air b&b is perfect.

I switched over to 5W30 Redline around the second oil change. I change it every 7500 miles (or less), which for me is once a year. I'm at 46K now, this year I'm going to send a sample to Blackstone. The additive package ready doesn't matter, what matters is does the oil work well in the engine and have low wear metals. PUP on paper does have anything outstanding in additive package, but most used oil analysis show very low wear metals. PUP has a very good base oil, something a oil analysis doesn't show.
