Hey guys, need some advice real quick. Realized I bought 5w30 redline oil instead of the 5w20:Pshyco:

I am not sure if being that its closer to winter that it would be ok?

I have LT headers and diablosport 93 octane hemifever tune with mds shut off. Is this going to be alright to run? I have some chatter from the lifters that I was hoping redline would take care. Can I run this oil or will I regret it? Hoping I don't have to go through the trouble to return it.

Anyhow, 5w20 and 5w30 both have the same cold visc, the only difference is how they work on operating temp when both oils are thin anyway.

Buy what you need in 5w20 and then use 1 qt 5w30 until all used up.

Thats a good idea dexter, burla, wil the 5w30 be a thinner oil at operating temps or thicker? And will it effect the motor internally? I should know these things :|

5w20 visc at operating temps are 9, 5w30 are 12, So it is a little "thicker". Or better to say 5w20 is thinner, because that **** is like water. Both cold visc way higher depending on temp, like 4 or 5 times higher but are identical, same winter rating. Most of the oil guys on the board use 5w30, and higher in the mds 5.7 engine. I'm telling you 5w30 redline is the best oil made that I know of, it is what I use in my Ram, you will not have any issue. If you want to run what the OEM asks for go for it, but it is a lesser oil in every way. With the numerous cam fails, put a little trust in me that you should be running 5w30. Does your neck of the woods get -20 or colder?

Indeed temps drop significantly at night and during the day depending on the winter weather we have. I have read so much about this redline that I wanted to try it out! I dont have any "hemi tick" but have a little lifter chatter that I was hoping to quiet down with this oil that I havnt been able to with any others. IE Valvoline maxlife then I switched to royal purple. And now this redline that I hope impresses me. I know this stuff is plastered all over this forum which is great, and I appreciate your fast response!

Edit: I have 145000 miles on the odometer too.

When I say best oil, I mean for our application specifically. Generally speaking I like to avoid say'n best, but it has everything the Ram engineers say is important to hemi's and then some. High moly, high zinc, detergency, almost identical visc at 0w40 srt oil, good tbn, and goes even beyond by having a PAO/Ester base. Consider the issues that come up with hemi's, it just isn't a great strategy to run sparce 5w20 oils even though that is what is recommended. Ram would not condone this garbage if not for what the gov't does with CAFE standards. It is your truck, your equipment, you should research the best way to care for it. Nobody but you has an interest in having the longevity of service life. Also, read my filter thread in my sig of you haven't. A great member here found that landmark test proving the benefits of spun microglass filters like Royal Purple.

Let the synthetic oil thread know if it worked, or that we are full of crap, lol. Sometimes it takes a while for the moly to plate, up to 500 miles. Sometimes it is butter smooth out of the gate.

So moving over to 0w30 from 5w30 only buys you -5 degrees, but you pay a price for it, especially in Redline. HTHS goes way down, and NOACK goes way up, and you loose visc at operating temps. I would stay 5w30 redline unless I was colder the -20, then I might try the 0w30, but I wouldn't like it.

See chart- note 10w30 and 10w60 have same cold flow.

Great info, thanks again for the quicker response rather than having to read through hours of pages on the "oil thread" I have to read the oil thread for a weekend thoroughly and see what everyone is saying. I will definitely post a follow up somewhere on results if I do truly notice a differance!

Are u sure it's from your lifterrs???? I have the same setup as u and my clatter I thought would be clmingjb from lifters is actually the injectors ....I took a stethoscope to them and could clearly hear each one . Check yours and let me know.... I then brought it to the dealer and has a tech ride with me and listen to the clatter and he stated it's normal engine noise . Injectors will make some light tapping.,nothing to be concerned with. If u want ...send me a video of Ur ticking . I'll send u one of mine as well.

Im also running a redline amsoil mix of. 5w20 and 5w30

IF your worried mix 4 qts 5w20 and 3 5w30 redline...that’s what I did. But you can rn straight 5w30 without problems!

Not a bad idea to mix 5W-20 Redline with 5W-30 Redline , but imo I'd just go full 30 weight Redline like so many are doing now . I've actually ran 40wt oil twice with zero issues and it ran very smooth & quiet as well .
I've settled in on this combo : Redline 10W-30 4ea qts and 3ea qts of Redline 5W-30 due to the 10W Redline oil having extra Molybdenum, zinc , phophorus and Calcium .

Hope this helps !

Hey u are running the same exact set up as me! I have tucking but I think and have been told by mechanics it’s exaggerated by the headers ... would you mind sending me a video of yours?we can do it over phone or here. Might ease each others minds on this tic

Hate to Hijack the thread a little, perhaps I should ask in the synthetic oil one...
Does anyone know of where I can pick up Redline Oil in Alaska? I've searched all over, even some of the motorsport shops, but haven't had any luck.
