I have a 2017 3.6 pentastar QC. I’m doing a level with Bilstein and 1.75” bora spacers. I’m trying to decide on tires. My question is, how much heavier of a tire can I go with before I start getting a real negative effect? I’ve found stock terra grappler g2’s to be 3.5lbs heavier than stock and similar size Falken Wild Peaks to be 8lbs heavier at 48lbs. I’d love to go taller/wider than stock but the weight then sky rockets. Stock tires are at 40lbs. Any help would be appreciated.

First I’m glad you recognize rolling mass, that’s light years above many others here. The weight added is exponential based on the tire size. So stock tire size say you add 2 pounds you wouldn’t notice. Not that you can get a 2 inch taller at that same 2 pounds it takes a lot more force to spin it.

That being said a few pounds at stock height will be hard to gauge. A few pounds oversized and it ads up quickly. It’s hard to say how much will you notice but when you upsize 8 pounds per tire is a lot.

Get tires you love, no matter what they are going to affect your truck, keep them light don’t go too crazy and let the transmission do it’s job keeping your acceleration and save weight on width if you can. I went 11.5 to save 7 pounds per tire

I think the falken wildpeak atm stock size the best looking atm tire for the weight. I would doubt that 32 pounds of unsprung weight would be that noticeable at all. The only other “light” option would be nitto terra grappler xl 305/55/20. They look great and weigh 50 pounds. They would probably hurt mileage/performance more because of the width though.

32 pounds is a ton, but A/T tires are a trade off. My tires are 70 pounds each, you’ll feel that.

Take an 8 pound bowling ball, hold it close you your chest and spin around as fast as you can. Now hold the “light” ball out at full arms length and try to spin at the same speed.

Weight was one of my main focal points when shopping for my current tires. I knew going up in size was going to negatively hurt my mpg, so I wanted to mitigate it as much as possible. Most of the cheaper tires you'll find will also be the heaviest, by a lot usually. Find some styles you like than compare weights and go with the lightest ones.

The Falkens that everybody raves about on here are actually considerably heavier than similar style tires in the same size. My Generals came in at 60lbs each and the Falkens are 67lbs. 7lbs might not seem like a lot, but when you're coming from a 40lb stock tire it's huge. My mpg drop is less than 2 after tires and a level, my evic runs consistently above 18, whereas stock form it would hover around 20. I can live with that.

While weight shouldn't be the #1 factor, it definitely needs to be considered.

Thanks for the replies, if the truck was a Hemi I’d go 35x12 I’m trying to be a little more conservative with the V6. I’m not sure how the 275/60/20 will look once it’s leveled and wheels are spaced. Maybe I’ll do them then see how the stock tires look before I make a decision.

I like the look of the Falkens but at 5+lbs heavier than the terra grapplers they may not be worth the $$$ savings

Well at least it sounds like I know more than I do!

When I was tire shopping I noticed a 2017 V6 with a lift and some big beefy Nitto's at a used car dealer in town. I took my work car up there pretending to be truck shopping so I could test drive it. I wanted to see how much louder those oversized All Terrains would be and if they would be worth it because they look GOOD. The noise isn't what surprised me, it was the power. Mine just goes fine and it doesn't feel like I have to push it hard to get it to move. That truck felt DEAD on it's feet and under powered! It didn't just pull away from a stop light... you had to dig deep into that pedal. We pulled onto the bypass and I had to wring it out to get to 70 and I don't know if it got past 6th gear to do it.

Those oversized tires don't just add rolling mass... they change the gearing of the truck. I'm happy with the Pentastar V6 but larger rubber is something I think you'd regret later for overall drivability.

That’s my concern. When I went from stock 17’s to stock 20’s the truck was all confused and drove like ****. I made an appointment with the dealer to flash the computer for the new tire size the next day. After the flash the truck felt just like it did with the 17’s. I’m very happy with the v6 with a pedal commander on city +2. Going to anything bigger than the stock size scares me though.

I’ve also noticed that when U measure my stock tires with a tape, they only measure out to 32”. I’m wondering if the Falkens and the Nittos will actually measure to 33”

If you go to Tire Rack or some place and look at the actual tire specs... Even the stock Goodyears measure out at 33"

Also you will find that on the truck with a sensible amount of air in them they will be even shorter than what Tire Rack says .

The online tire dimensions are not mounted with the weight of the truck

Those dimensional specs are for the tire with air mounted on a wheel. The measured wheel width will usually be in ( ). Once mounted on the truck its gonna be about 1/2” - 1” less depending the trucks weight.

A 35/12.50 will probably say 34.7” but mounted on the truck will be right at 34”

Makes sense because mine are right at 32” measured on the truck.

You can go up 2 sizes without any compromising of power. If you go 3 sizes you’d probably want to change the PC to sport +1
