I have a high mileage 2014 Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi. It is screeching at idle and low RPM, and throwing a cylinder 7 misfire code. It also has power surges especially at low rpm. What is the likely problem? Any ideas.

If you can a video would help diagnose this. Have you tried swapping coils/injectors with a known good cylinder?

K, so please forgive my ignorance. That means I need to pull the engine and replace the cam shaft and probably all of the lifters? Anything else?

No need to pull the engine, but the heads and everything on the front of the motor needs to come off. It's a job to replace cam and lifters in these Hemi's....

Ok, thanks for your help guys. I took what y’all said and did some research. Apparently this is a really common problem with Hemis. It’s all over the internet.

Yes it is.

But it not just Hemi’s. It is most (not all) modern engines on mass product lines that are junk. Made cheap so we have to keep buying. Hemi’s just seem to have a **** cam and lifters.

Good luck sir. Get the truck plugged into a scanner. Have an experienced mechanic listen to it.

That job is doable by yourself IF you have the time and patience. Find your parts first. Try not to go back to OEM. I recommended Hellcat parts if you can find them.

x3 cam is toast, and probably dumping metal into the engine, Drain oil and check for metal if you are gonna keep driving, use thicker oil. Make sure oil is at least warm as well, metal will flow out easier. You could swap a plug in 7 to verify, by my sense is the thing is toast.

cam install thread

What oil were you using? how many miles?

you can even send a sample to get a used oil analysis, using your engine will be a risk if there is metal rolling around. Always a choice needs to be made, reman or cam swap. If you are going to use the dealer, I'd rather use a mom and pop shop and get a reman, cost would be about the same, give or take a grand. You can always ask your dealer the cost for a cam and lifter swap, the costs are all over the board. But, you may want to use after market cam and lifters from moes. poor quality is one big suspect in these fails, why go back to the same ****.

Using a reman could also fix whatever that is on the off chance we are wrong as well, like a rod or something. What's your skill set? Can you take an engine down or will you be using shop?
