I'm pushing 161000 with no issues yet. Hoping for atleast 200000 before that happens

Mine were cracked on my 97 With the 318 for idk how long. Around the valve seat. Never had any issues though. Had 165,000 miles and sold it to someone who uses it as a woods truck. Reused then stock heads too. Didn’t have any compression loss.

It might be common, but it doesn't always happen. I'm the original owner of my '99, and haven't had that problem. Almost 198k. 360ci.

I have nothing to add here but I looked too fast at your thread title and wondered about the second generation crack heads... :insane:

My 95 has roughly 150,000 miles, runs fine, no issues, if the heads are cracked there is no way to know it. 318, also had a 98? Dakota RT back in the day, 360, chipped, it went like hell, no issues with the heads.

Hughes Engines may be worth talking to, they offer aftermarket heads that are "breathed on", those motors are pretty bullet proof.

I had to fix the intake plenum, used a Hughes kit, back a few years ago, it worked as advertised, installed perfectly, fixed the knock under load, oil burning ( especially under load ) and added power ( I was getting the right air / fuel mixture ).

Yes those kegger intakes kinda have issues. Replaced one with a speed master air gap and a Edelbrock 650 avs2 it seems to run quite a bit better with low end power along with decent top end. After changing the warped heads out that is.

I really like your signature, about Hospitality. My son is currently GM of a restaurant in Toronto, has been GM a few times now, also Event Coordinator, etc, I have heard that saying before and I get it..

So, you aren't running fuel injection, and its better performance? How about the gas mileage? I am not planning on swapping, just curious. I think my 95 has just become my winter truck.

I haven't checked MPG yet I will get back to you on that.
I feel like at least 10 miles to gal.
Considering the mods is good, Edelbrock AVS2 650 is a nice tunable carb.
Motor is a 96 318 and yes it runs much stronger with carb.

My 98 Dodge 2500 work truck we bought new has the 5.9 that one of the heads cracked at 450,000 miles. The only oil our company has is Phillip 66 15W40 diesel oil which has been used in it since day one. Believe me, I personally am a synthetic oil person and synthetic is the only oil I will use in my own vehicles even though I could use this oil for free so I won't get into a argument about which oil is better. I replaced the whole engine because it started using oil at 360,000 miles anyway. The truck now has 489,000 miles on it and hasn't been driven in the last 3 years because we bought a newer one (Dodge of course) except for taking it to get it inspected every year.

After running two tanks of gas I figured about 12 mpg with carburetor and with the stock set up injected about 10 mpg 15 when it was new.

Better mileage with the carb.. wow.

I did an experiment way back, I had a 76 1500 Ram, 3 on the tree, slant six. I removed the carb, and put some screen mesh inbetween the carb and the intake. I pulled every second wire out of the screen mesh, I thought it would be too restrictive.
The logic was to more evenly vaporize the fuel.
It worked... the engine ran just fine, I thought it had more torque, but ran out of power too early, like about 50 mph. Not enough air was getting in, is my guess.
I should have tried other meshes, with more strands removed.

It was all unscientific as heck, no idea about gas mileage, just seat of the pants, but it seemed to have more power off the line. That was a slow truck... club cab, 3 speed. I eventually installed a head from a 69 slant six, it had higher compression ratio and a different carb, that really woke up the motor.
