I have read a ton of good information here regarding shock replacement and what to expect. Through all my reading I do have a couple of questions.

It seems that all mention of Bilstein 5100 shocks indicate that they are for lifted trucks only. Why is this? Is the shock physically loo long for a standard height truck - is bottoming out an issue?

I have a 2014 RAM 1500 2WD and would like to put 5100s on the rear if it is proper to do so.

My next question would be if I did go with 5100s on the back, what would be the proper shock to use on the front since my 2WD truck does not have struts?

Thanks a million for any advice you can provide!

I am getting mine put on this week and I dont believe there is an issue with standard height. The adjustable distance iui s 0-2.75
I also have always heard about everybody raving about the bilstiens and I am anxious to see the difference. My personal opinion if you are doing all 4 I would raise the front the 2" because it makes an enormous difference in the look of the truck, but either way you should have no issues staying with the stock height

Bilstein's 5100's are awesome i installed them on my ram. i have mine set on 2.1 height to level the truck. They do recommend a alignment after install and factory struts are junk my left front was shot with only 30,000 miles on it you guys will love the ride and the look hope this helps

Thanks all for the replies. My remaining question would be since my truck is 2 wheel drive and does not have front struts, what would be the appropriate shock to use on the front of a non-lifted truck if 5100s were installed in back.

Thanks!

Will 2wd shocks for the 5.7 hemi work for the 3.6 Pentastar rams of the same generation? Just wondering if the 5.7 and 3.6 have identical suspension just different engines or are the suspension systems different?

The only thing different is the engine, and if you have air suspension vs not having it.

There is no 5100 OE application for the 2wd front. There is a 5100 front set for a lifted 1.75" front. Typically lifted with 2" coil springs or 2" spacers. If you're keeping your factory coils then you want the Bilstein 4600's in the front. likewise for the rear there is a 4600 set available for the back. the 5100 will be 0-1" so you can run them with stock coils or 1" spacer. If you're keeping your factory front i doubt you'll want another 1" rake in the back of your 2wd, they're only 1/2" longer than stock so you can run them with factory rear coils.

Rancho has also options for your factory 2wd with shocks front and rear in 5000, 7000 or 9000 series. you can adjust the firmness with the last.

The Bilstein 5100 24-274999 for 2wd front has a collapsed length of 9.88" and extended length of 14.63" while the 4600 version 24-187480 has a collapsed length of 9.75" and an extended length of 14.10 .
