The roof of my black truck has several spots where the paint is checking from living outside for 7 years so I got a quote from a very reputable body shop. My appointment was on Wednesday. Drop my truck off early Wednesday morning and they call me 25 mins later to tell me they can't bring my truck in the shop because it looks like the truck was recently detailed inside. I had used 303 on the interior about 2 weeks ago. They looked up the MSDS of 303 which shows it was low on silicone but had another ingredient in it that would cause fisheyes and other paint problems throughout the shop. They won't touch my truck until the end of September now and told my to wipe down the entire interior with Simple Green to "decontaminate" it.

While I appreciate them wanting to do the best job possible on my truck as well as the other vehicles they're working on, I just never even thought this could be an issue.

A search online shows its a highly debated topic so I figured I'd ask here, is this truly a thing???

It's a thing, but I think they are going a bit overboard. Back East we sold some goods to a couple BASF plants, and they were beyond fanatical about what could go through the gates there. We would have to submit MSDS in adavance, then, if the specs passed muster, they would purchase a small quantity of the item, and their own lab would test it to be certain it matched the specs provided.

Since they are the shop and technically the experts I would say I would believe them over an opinion here jmo.

Agreed it can be an issue, but they are over acting.

Close the doors and charge for exterior cleaning. They have better chemicals. Simple green is nearly pointless. You would do better using Totally Awesome from the 99cent store.

To keep in prospective, i worked in a composites shop that banned Armstrong silicone bracelets because they heard that there was traces of uncured silicone. No testing, no research and no proof that it existed.

It makes sense to me, as its something you can't see so they don't know where all over the interior it went (especially if someone sprayed directly on the dash inside rather than outside using a towel to spread), but once one of their crew touches it and touches other stuff in the shop, eventually people are going to touch that object down the line and when its on their hands and they touch the objects they are painting or their tools and transfer it that way it could be really expensive.

Maybe not an issue once or twice, but over time transfer of contaminants from inside vehicles to around their shop would accumulate.

I haven't heard this before. Maybe that is why every time I have had one of my trucks at the body shop it comes back completely detailed top to bottom?

I never considered spray shine products being a body shop issue but I do know from chatting with those in the business that silicone sealer or calk, even in trace amounts will render new body and paintwork ruined.

Think you shared the bottom line right at the beginning, "... very reputable...". If they say use Simple Green, I would follow their advice if you want them to fix your truck. Of course there are other cleaners but they believe in it so what is the harm. And my personal opinion is I want a shop that is that strict, I would know I am getting top quality. We can debate it incessantly here but it won't change their opinion. Good luck and look forward to hearing how it turns out.

I had this happen to the roof of my Magnum. I can't remember the exact circumstances, but my roof wound up with fisheyes and another customer's vehicle slicked up was the cause. Because they didn't know at what painting stage the silicone hit, it was a complete strip and repaint. A simple $800 roof rack hole turned into a $$$ redo.

Rather be sure that there is best chance to so it right the first time.

So I guess that's why I've seen 'body shop safe' on products. I didn't know what that was about, how interesting.

Years ago I did some work at a powder coating shop. They provided any chemicals and lubricants I needed as they said anything with silicone in it can cause fisheye and other problems with the powder coating.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was originally pretty pissed they wouldn't paint it until September but I guess it's a good thing they didn't just spray it and send it[emoji23]
