Had the afternoon off, so I decided to price around some local "speed" (a loosely held term) shops in the area to get a nice exhaust put on. Went to 3 places...

1st place - A clean, decent shop. 5 bays, some trucks and older cars outside
Me - Hello, I am looking for an exhaust system to replace the factory can, remove the resonators and would like to keep it all stainless. I plan on upgrading some other parts and want to start with a good exhaust. I travel north often and will be in salt, snow and a lot of corrosion. I dont want anything to rust out quickly.
Them - Flowmaster 50 HD... We gots' dem in stock and can puts one on yer "dodge" for $329 right now. We even keep your stock "regulators" so's it dont be so loud in your truck
Me - I asked for stainless, and would like to delete the "resonators". And $329 is ridiculously high for a flowmaster.
Them - But dem's flowmasters ARE steel. And we can work a deal if you payn' in cash money.
Me - Buy, you wasted enough of my time.

2nd Place - Smaller 3 bay place, clean, nice facility.
Me - Hello, I am looking for an exhaust system to replace the factory can,........
Them - SUPER 44!! Make your truck sound mean and give it some horsepower!!!! You gotta give that hemi breathing room!!! Those Hemi's gotta get the air flow! (note the exclamation marks... guy was pumped of red bull or white powder, not sure which)
Me - Super 44. As in... Flowmaster?
Them - YES!! Best to make your "rod" go fast and give it breathing room! We weld it up to a short piece of this great 3" Aluminum steel to save weight! Less weight = more horsepower and speed!! and...
Me - Wait (I interupted) OK, I don't think you understood what I am looking for. You have signs up that say Corsa, Borla, Magnaflow. Can you suggest one of those?
Them - We just have those signs for looks. We have the SUPER 44!! (again the excitement jumps in his voice) and can put it on right now!
Me - OK, thank you.
Them - So you don't want to do this now?
Didn't even respond or look back.

3rd Place - Large shop. Does other repairs also, suspension, brakes, etc.
Me - What exhaust systems do you install?
Them - Flowmasters. We have them in stock
Me - Ok, thanks. bye

F@ck me....

Would have paid $700 to 1K to get a decent system ordered.

Best thing to do is order whatever mufflers you want and then have them installed.

Thats what I am going to do. Leaning towards one of the Borla setups.

Not sure if I want one of the places to even touch my truck. Not sure what would be the response if I asked them to Tig weld.

It's not really surprising if you think about it logically.

For starters, your average consumer isn't posting on a automotive forum. So you're already not average. And the average consumer has heard things like Flowmaster & K&N, like Nike, these things sell themselves on name alone even though they're terrible products in reality. (Nike's are over priced sh// shoes that fall apart in a month) And they just keep selling and selling like the energizer bunny.

Because average consumers don't know any better.

So to an average owner who says "I want an exhaust" and drives to a shop, he'll pick a Crapmaster or a Cherryturd. And then proceed to think it sounds good.

Do your research, order and get it installed or install it yourself. That's your best bet.

^This. Tho the shop I've used in the past ONLY carried Blowmaster. I put a Thrush and Dynomaxes on the trucks when otherwise they'd have probably gotted FM Super 44s.

Most exhaust shops won't carry stainless due to the expense. As stated before average people just roll up and say make it louder. You are best off just ordering a kit And I stalling it or ordering all the peices you need and let someone else install it. If this helps our trucks are 3in in and dual 2.25 out. So you can order the muffler of your choice and some 2.25 stainless tubing to replace the resonators and make up the lost length of the massive stock muffler.

If you like Magnaflow, take a look at the Mufflex kits. They use a Magnaflow muffler and weld on the extra piping to make it completely clamp on. This is something you can install yourself in about 30 minutes, it is all stainless form the muffler to the extra piping, clamps, and exhaust hanger brackets. To top it off, they are under $300 shipped.

Flowmaster makes a super 50 HD in stainless, but you can buy one online for $150 so your paying $179 for the install which will take 30 minutes... Sounds like a steal!

LOL atleast they carry something and weren't afraid to put it on. When I was shopping for an exhaust, I called a few places and you could hear the fear in their voice.

"oh god, this guy isn't calling about a '98 civic"

I ended up order an MBRP stainless catback exhaust for $450 and the dealer installed it for $80.
