There is usually a manual door opener installed by the person door that enters the garage. Wouldn't someone open the garage door before getting in the vehicle?
There's nothing in a vehicle that stops it from starting while inside of a building/garage so why would manufacturers look at the home link from anything other than security and convenience.
Many homes have an “attached garage” which can be entered from the house, kitchen, etc. The entire house can be poisoned by an idling car in the attached garage.
(Of course, if remote-start is used…. the hot-wired Homelink wouldn’t perform protectively anyway.)

Is there a message on the instrument cluster that says "transmitting"?
A follow up. I tried again. This time to find the message, that was on the instrument cluster, as Ken suggested.

My owner's manual said to watch for flashing lights on the buttons. I never saw any. But this time I watched the dash, and saw that the Homelink deleted the old codes, and learned the new code.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I've lived in a few houses with an attached garage and door opener for 25 years. I've always used the wall mounted opener when walking out of the house and into the garage to get in the car.
Sure, you shouldn't start and run a car inside a closed garage for a long period of time......but if you did start the car in the garage and then opened the garage door it's not like there is any issue. The car running for 30 seconds before opening the garage door does not cause enough carbon monoxide to cause issues.
